DO NOT hold the spark plug when doing this.
Correct, DO NOT hold the spark plug.

Read the first four responses... The more likely scenario is you pulled the spark plugs wire and now have intermittent/weak spark.

You may have a safety kill switch that is open. If it's a riding mower it will be behind/under the seat, at least back in the day it was. I haven't dealt with this in some time. Check your manual to see if you have one of those.
You could get a cheap spark tester to check for spark

Way less likely to do the spark plug dance that way

Going to shoot for an obvious one here...is the fuel valve from the tank open or closed?

It’s closed, I never touched anything else other than the spark plugs. I’m gonna try to work on it some more today and see if I can figure it out.

It’s closed,
If it’s closed that means no fuel is getting to the carburetor.

That'll do it!

I’m anxious waiting on a reply on this. Spent a weekend working on an old tractor once only to have dinner with my dad Sunday evening to have him tell me he had turned the valve off when he plowed that week.

Problem solved. Before I replaced the spark plugs, I replaced the battery. Brand new battery and it started right away immediately after changing the spark plugs (just didn’t start right after that). Apparently the battery was dead already. I returned the battery and replaced it today and it starts and runs like a charm. Thankfully I’m just an idiot and won’t need to pay hundreds of dollars on repairs
