I’m trying to fix an electrical problem in my back yard. I’ve got my water pump, 2 fountains, and sprinkler system all plugged in to different plug ins, but they all run through one single 15 amp plug in breaker.

Everything works for about 15 minutes then the circuit breaker in the plug in gets tripped.

I’m thinking I need to change out the 15 amp plug in breaker with a 20 amp breaker.

All help is greatly appreciated.

TIA.

Because this is the OT

If you have 12g wire leaving the 15a breaker you could do that, it is almost certain you have 14g which means a 20a breaker will not properly protect the wiring.

If it worked before but is not working now you have another problem. If you have added something that is causing the overload then you need to address that. It is possible the breaker has gotten weak if it has tripped a lot and a replacement with another 15a breaker could solve the issue.

Does your water park offer summer passes? Asking for a friend.

Sounds like a trip on OL after everything starts to run for a bit.

If the conductor is a #12 I would be OK with just replacing it with a 20A breaker.

However, if it’s a #14, you would need to replace it with a #12 before upgrading the breaker to a 20A.

It did work before, but it would trip often. We’d just go and reset it and it’d be good for a week or two. Now it trips after 15 minutes.

We did add a water pump to the circuit, but that’s all that’s new and it’s hardly ever on. We did add about 8 more plug ins to the whole circuit, but nothing is plugged into them.

I don’t know what gauge the wire is.

Probably #14.

You can open the main panel and look at the conductor wired into the breaker. It should have the size stamped on the insulation.

ETA: if the main insulation is has been removed, you may be able to tell by the insulation color. Yellow normally means #12, and white is #14.

My panel has some 14s in it and the outer insulation is white. All the #12s are yellow.

Maybe your 15amp breaker is bad.

Sounds to me that the circuit is overloaded. Normally, youd put 8 receptacles on a 20A circuit. You have a couple motors on that circuit as well.

It could be a number of things, but id run another circuit out there at a minimum.

The frequent tripping may have indeed weakened the breaker and a new 15a might get you back to where you were but unlikely to stop the problem. There is a decent chance it is the motor in your pump cycling and the inrush current is tripping the breaker that already has a load on it. It may be time to run a dedicated circuit for the highest load which is likely the pump motor.

If I had to bet I would guess your pump motor load runs afoul of NEC 220.14(C) calculations.

I've used Farthing Electric and been satisfied. Fixed problem at a reasonable cost.
