The reel mowers aren't bad, I had a Scott's, they just don't cut worth a shite, leave too many stragglers and I had to mow 2-3 times. I enjoyed the quietness though.

I have a snapper commercial 21" hi vac and it's a bad mofo.

what do you primarily use it for? side discharge, bag or mulching?

i'm team-mulching all the way. i've owned homes with lawns since 1996 and i'm gonna say i've used a bag less than 6 times in 24 years.

My grandfather used to have one. 10 year old me sure thought it was a weird lawn mower. Until I used it.

I have a bagging system but only use that for leaves in the fall. Install mulch plug in bagger chute and run a Snapper 2049 Ninja mulching blade cutting grass.

The commercial mower is heavy (thicker deck) vs. the consumer model but has metal wheels which I prefer.

Whatever you buy just please remember to drain the carb before you store it for the winter.

Come to think of it wait until next April when everyone is selling their mower on Facebook cause it’s “running rough”. That how I bought my recycler this year. New plug and clean out the carb bowl and jet and it runs like new.

Another snapper professional hivac owner here. My last snapper lasted 20 years and this one is on its third season. I mow a lot, twice a week usually. So mostly mulching. But I will use the bag when I really want a clean cut or leaves to pick up.

The only time I have had issues with a dirty carb was when I stored the mower dry. I have found filling the tank to the very top of the tank with fuel treated with anything (i use startron) works the best. Wet carb doesn't seem to have issues. It is water in the gas that can be problematic.

Actually close to the best time of year to go mower shopping, I picked up my Honda 21" RWD for well under $300 during Fall sales. If I ever get another it will be a Nexite decked Honda with a GX motor or a DR SP-series. Most important feature on whatever you get is to have a manual fuel cutoff valve, run the motor dry after every use and you'll never have starting issues.

Unless you forget to turn the valve before trying to start it. Then spend an hour trying to figure out why your mower won't start.

Doing more research on the Snappers, some do like the ninja blades but all the snappers without the ninja blades look awesome.

I would pull the trigger on any of the snappers that have the deck design of the ninja. There are 3 of them. You can get different blades if you need a change.

I just replaced a Snapper commercial 21" last summer that I bought new 16 years ago.. aside from just the routine maintenance, it has never given me any issues and are built like a tank.. I replaced it with a Honda Hrx and can tell you that the Honda is a more refined machine with a better quality of cut. They both rear wheel drive, the honda took some getting used to but its flt out awesome. The honda has a 200cc motor that is noticably quieter than my older 190cc.
The wheel adjustment on the Honda is quite good, the snapper was fine as well..The Honda has a blade brake clutch to stop the blade but not the engine and holy shite I would have never believed that feature could be so convienient. The deck on the snapper was steel and was still in good shape after 16 years, the Honda is made of heavy plastic/polymer. The price of the Honda was ~$800 and I think I paid around $600 for my old snapper, the new ones are a little more.. so costs are what and what.
They are both great machines but the snapper does not cut and mulch as good as the Honda. Cant go wrong either way, the new snappers can be had with a Honda GX motor for a little more coin..which if you lean snapper, that GX motor is a beast

$800 is my upper limit so i may look at the honda.

my biggest concern is how well this travels at sideways angles & up and down hills because i tend to slip down and don't need the lawnmower coming after me.

the troy bilt has been great for mowing but it fell apart with the quickness so who cares how well it mows if you have to replace it after a year.

i put a new timing key in back in the summer (my fault for trying to mow a rock) and the screws fell out of the frame meaning the drive gears disengaged and the deck dropped and scalped the grass and putting self-tapping screws in lasted about 3 more mows until it happened again with those and i had to drill a hole through the plastic & metal and run a bolt through it.

ghetto as hell and i can't understand how lawnmower manufacturers get away with making something as critical as the level adjuster and drive gears this crappy.
