What ya got?

I'm just in the process putting in a transfer switch with mobile generator. A window unit or two is in the near future.
I want to be ready rather than wishing I was.

If you have a lot of trees in your neighborhood and room to store plywood I'd pre-cut sheets to fit in the windows and keep hurricane clips handy.

If you have the funds, some fabric panels like these would be great. When I lived in Florida, these were standard when building new homes. The tubes you rolled them into took up 2 sqft in a corner in my garage and were simple to put on and take off.

Don’t live in hurricane danger zones anymore, but Just curious, how much would that cost?

Start evaluating trees around your house, at the very least make sure you trim them away from the house.

If your roof isn't brand new, start checking out vents, whirlybirds, etc to make sure they are secure, have the proper caps, no leaks around them, etc.

Going to try it this year, but had several coworkers tell me they removed every 6th board before Ida and didn't have any issues

I'm not sure for install but I know some sites have DIY kits and they show you how to measure and everything. Obviously it depends on how big your windows are but I remember it being about $100-$110 per window.

Don't know if they were 6' or 8' fences, but figured it's at least worth a shot...once I finally get my fence back up

Since you're putting in a transfer switch you probably already do/have done this. Run and/or service your generator now. I don't know how many times after a hurricane I see the "ohnoz, my generator won't start" posts on facebook.

I run mine once a month just to make sure it doesn't sit and gum up.

Same. I usually do it once a month while blowing off the driveway after mowing and weed eating since I'm making noise any way.

I'll add to that to put a load on the generator while it is running and don't just turn it off. Hit the fuel cut off and run the gas out the carb.

Yep. I also use that time to make sure the window units are in working condition.

It sucks at $23/gallon but I have 3 1-gallon cans of TruFuel on the shelf next to the extra oil, spare sparkplug, and air filter for my generator. I have a 5-gallon Eagle fuel can full of Stabil loaded 91-oct no-ethanol gasoline to run it on but the Trufuel will keep for years so it's always ready in case I get caught with my gas can empty. My generator is only a 4500W CPE though so 3 gallons is hours easily.

New generator that works on 3 fuels----Gasoline, Natural Gas and Propane and ready to hook up to my house gas line with all the hose and fittings needed.

Small room 110 A/C unit, box fans, extension cords, big freezer full of prepared food, lots of water on hand, plenty of canned goods from the store and stuff I canned out my garden.

Enough cash on hand that I won't need to go to a bank for a few weeks if need be.

Got a brand new window unit in the garage ready for action when it’s name is called.

Also the $17 5 gallon gas cans are a steal for generators for hurricane season

Forgot to add, make sure all food that could leak (raw meats, frozen fruits…) are either repackaged w a food saver or put in a zip lock or plastic container.
Only had to do a quick wipe down when I came back to town around day 5. All we had to do was lay everything out for pics, then drop in garbage bags. Had minimal smell

It seems like a kind of damage to more inland homes in ida and the lake charles storms was from water infiltration through roof damage. Houses that looked fine on the outside other than some roofing missing were destroyed from water logged collapsed ceilings.

Has anyone considered trying to mitigate this?

Preferably ice and water shield installed at the time of roof installation would be best but what if there was some way to capture and channel water in your attic to a soffit or porch? Like a roof inside your roof. This would be for newer style high pitch roof houses, not ranches.

Tons of food already prepared or ready to prepare in the big freezer. Of course a generator if needed to keep the major stuff going along with one single room A/C that I stick in a window and remove as needed.

The generator is one that runs on 3 fuels, gasoline, propane and natural gas and I've got it ready for all 3 if need be but prefer natural gas so as to not have to be in a 5 hr. line waiting for gasoline.

I'll get water ready as needed in plenty of clean containers just in case. Of course, cash on hand is also a good thing.

I also have several propane tanks to use to cook things on the grill if all other options are not available.
