How often do your home a/c unit(s) break?

I don't think either of mine has ever gone a full year without breaking. They're only 7-8 yrs old and supposedly good brand Rheem.

Rheem is not a good brand.

Why do you need two units for your double-wide?

Two years ago I would say never. Now I would say about every four days. Jesus

10 yrs is the average lifespan nowadays.
Do you have ferris coils? Are you losing refrigerant? Is your system sized correctly for the house?
Capacitors go out, they're wear parts.

Almost never. Both Trane units, one from 1995 and the other from 2006. Serviced and cleaned every year, only one needed a slight top off on refrigerant this year. I check the capacitors and have my own testing equipment to check for anything showing signs of weakness or a motor drawing more current than it should. Replaced one capacitor as a precaution this year for all of $20, keep several spares on hand.

Conspiracy theory here… whenever I’ve done the maintenance inspection plans with a/c units… that same summer, whether it be weeks or months, something goes awry that needs fixing. I get paranoid they mess with something you have to call them back

1st unit,14 years a circuit board went bad,was fixed same day. Then it wasn’t cooling well.Had new unit put in.
Current unit is 10 years old, have never had any problems at all.
I have a maintenance contract where they check it twice a year.
I read all these posts people talking about capacitors going bad, etc.I’ve never had a capacitor go bad in 24 years.

Same with Ruud (Rheem). Had a 30-yr.-old Rheem unit that was replaced just before Covid shutdown and both the unit fan and condenser fan went out within 2 months in 2023. We'll see what happens this summer.

Them has historically been a good brand. They also have the big box store line which I would question any installer installing one of those. Sounds like you got a poor install.

I remember reading somewhere between 75-80% of AC maintenance calls are because of algae/debris clogging the drainage lines.
We usually have an issue every 2-3 years, currently have a 4T Trane unit going on 8 years old

I have a geothermal unit that’s 14yrs old and this Spring has been a series of bandaids in an attempt to delay the massive costs of replacement.

Almost 16 years, no issues with either unit. I once had a slight leak in my smaller unit, and the AC technician recommended Stop Leak (or something equivalent) and it sealed it right up. That was over 5 years ago. The only other issue is that my heater stopped working on one of my units. Wasn't the unit's fault. I somehow had a bird build a nest through my exhaust piping out of my roof.
Both are Rheem units.

3 Trane units. 14 yrs. (2) evap coils. 1 condenser unit fan (i bought and replaced myself) , at least (1) capacitor. replaced the 2.5T AHU outright because it was almost as cheap as replacing the evap coil. that unit is upstairs and really is only used if we have a guest overnight staying up there.
