How Hard is It to Install a Range Hood?

We recently purchased a home that for some reason unknown to us, does not have the fan for the range hood. As you can see, they have the opening for it above the stove, and there is a vent tube that runs through the attic out the roof, but there is no fan at all. How hard is it to install one and is it something I (with limited DIY skills at the moment) can handle?

Picture of vent running through attic for reference:

I swapped out an old 70s hood with a Zephyr Cyclone. I think I just needed an adapter for the existing duct and made it seal with aluminum tape. Was easy if you’re used to using drills and such.

Would you have to run a duct through that upper bay that’s above where the hood would be installed? Mine is hidden by a cabinet but they probably have something nicer looking you could run through that opening.

i'm not quite sure what i'm looking it but if you are just doing a swap; at most you may have to cut the pipe to fit but if the space matches, those range hoods generally come with mounts you screw in first then you just lift the range onto them so its not like you have to hold it over your head with one hand while screwing it in.

did the owners swap out their hood for something cheap when they sold the house? i'm confused.

Looks like the hard part is done, the vent is in place through the roof.

the hood is supposed to go inside that arched panel above the range? If so, good luck with that I would recommend you get some help

Yes the hood is supposed to go into the arched area above the range. There’s a hole already cut as if they had one and a previous owner removed it or something

so the hood will need to be installed from below, screws go thru the top of the hood shroud from underneath. There will be a template in the box. You’ll need two people

Also on the top of the hood there will be a knockout for the vent pipe and a flange that will screw to the top of the hood, center mass. I would be ready with some flex pipe and foil tape in case they don’t line up

so once you mark your mounting screw locations, set the screws about 1/2 in with plenty of screw head showing, push the hood on to the screws using the slotted holes and then drive the screws in. I’m not sure how you attach the vent flue to the flange in that situation, if you have to attach it first you’re going to have a ratfrick to deal with

look and see exactly what condition behind that panel you are dealing with

Can't tell from the pic but is there a outlet to plug the fan in?

the hood will be wire nutted to a power supply…not plugged into an outlet. You’ll do that from underneath after you hang the hood. If there was a hood there before there should be a feed hole for the conductors

Well that settles it. I’m definitely an idiot. Listened to the inspector who told us that’s what it was but you’re exactly right. So definitely have our work cut out starting from scratch

Can you take a picture of where the venthood is supposed to be? People don't normally take a venthood with them. Maybe a refrigerator but nothing thats actually hard installed.

We don’t move in for another week and a half. That was during the inspection. So under that decorated piece above the stove top, there is a hole cut out for a vent pipe to go. I just made the assumption in the attic that that’s what it was. There is a spot for it but it seems like one was never installed

has this house ever been occupied?
if there’s just a hole and no vent flue at the hood location then yes you have some work to do. Call an HVAC contractor and have them come take a look

That’s a Heatilator fireplace. Look for a gas line running to the fireplace, then one running to your gas stove. If the fireplace is back to back with your gas top, they could have put a tee to split the line between the two. Find if you have any kind of vent pipe. With a gas stove, that seems very odd.
