Hot water heater question

I have a tank water heater and noticed the pilot light went out. Went in the attic to light it and the pilot light will light, but as soon as I switch the knob from “pilot” to “on” and the red button pops up, the pilot light goes back out. Any suggestions on what it may be?

I'm going out on a limb here by saying it may be a flow/pressure issue. I dont have gas appliances so I really dont know for sure.

not sure about modern water heaters but the old ones it was always the thermal coupling that needed replacement when pilot light wont stay lit.

Everything I’ve read said thermal couple and they’re pretty simple and cheap to replace.

thermal couple
Is it the one next to the flux capacitor?
It is a thermocouple.

Obligatory, Why are you heating your hot water?

I don't know about your hot water heater, but mine kicks on when the temp of the water drops just a few degrees. The water is still hot but not idea temp so my hot water heater works to raise the temp a couple of degrees.

The thermocouple that is heated up y the pilot light isn’t working. It is the little piece of medal that is protruding right where the pilot light burns. It heats up and lets the gas valve know that there is a flame before letting gas flow. Try taking a piece of sandpaper and clean it up the best you can. After you clean it make sure to wipe it off. If cleaning it doesn’t work it will have to be replaced

We have already gone over this in all the other threads. In that scenario, you have a hotter water heater.

Is it a Bradford White by chance?

this ^^^^
but first try this, loosen the nut on the small copper line that looks like a wire, give it a litttle side to side wiggle to clean the connection then snug it dont tight again but not super tight, its just a soft lead connector under there.
if its still not working but the pilot stays lit until you switch the valve then i thing the valve is what is bad. if it was the thermal coupling then it would go out as soon as you released the button to light it
