re: Honda gas mower vs EGO

Update...it's been 3-4 weeks since my purchase of an EGO mower and I love it. So much less hassle than gas. The cut has been fine. If I wait a full week between mowings, I have 1 bar left on a fully charged battery. Also purchased the EGO 56V telescopic 4Ah string trimmer. Took a little getting use to with the handling (especially edging along the driveway), but it is SO much better than gas or corded. I came home from work Thursday night at 7:20pm and edged/trimmed/mowed my front and back yard by 8:30 pm. It's quiet and just practical. This is mulching, by the way. I'm eventually going to bag once the grass stops growing so fast.

Solid post, and I agree.
My brother-in-law has the EGO mower and I recently borrowed it to mow my yard (actually, to fix the crappy mow job that my lawn service did a few days ago). I was impressed with how light it was and easy to handle. Didn't even need to use the self-propelled part, it was so easy to push.
Battery life was just enough to do my front yard.
BIL said the same thing about the blades: started with the mulching blades, but it returned too many clippings into the yard that it was starting to kill his grass. He switched to the bagging blades and never went back.
I see myself going with the EGO mower and trimmer, and letting go of the lawn service.

kork, didn't you open your old battery after they sent you a new one?
quote:Not really aside from the cells.
anything fun in there i can play with?
Here is a teardown and cell replacement.
I think all the electronics will last a really long time, so it's mostly just the cells that can fail. It takes 14 cells in series to get what Ego calls 56V, and evidently they are using 2.5ah cells which is why the pack with 14 cells is 2.5ah. The 5.0ah pack will have 2 parallel trains of 14 cells in series for 28 total cells, and multiply on up for the 7.5ah and 10ah packs. I guess the 4ah pack uses 2ah cells instead of 2.5.
Anyway, usually when a pack fails it's just 1 bad cell and the rest are still good, and one new cell looks to retail for about $5 or so. You can also get them in bulk recovered from other packs for like $1/cell, tested. Same 18650 cells that are in everything else, power tool packs, UPS units, EVs, and tons of things with their own onboard battery backup power. There are a few different styles, flat top vs. button top, some have protection circuits on top which extends the length a bit, but mostly if it fits and the cell hasn't been discharged too far or too many times it will work.
If you're handy and have a little bit of know-how, you can rebuild a bad pack pretty cheaply. Kinda like working on a small engine eh?

Unbeknownst to you, you just made the argument for buying an ego over a gas.

It's so easy to use these tools I'll walk up in dress clothes and do a quick blow off or trim a hedge. I always felt like I had to get into full "yard garb" with my old nasty gas tools.
Nothing wrong with that; there's a certain ritual that goes along with a Saturday yard day, but I like being able to easily do a quick task or 2 with zero hassle.
I've been known to trim my entire front hedges and blow off the debris while waiting for my wife to finish getting ready to go out.

I have both and use the ego as a backup for when something goes wrong with the gas mower which inevitably happens.
Carb junks up, cable pops or blade engage malfunctions.
Only real drawback to the EGO is the smaller cutting area but it works nicely othersise

Think that's what I'll do. Going to keep my gas mower for when we get a lot of rain and the grass gets long, but will get the Ego for regular mows. I have the Weed Eater, Edger and Blower but just haven't pulled the trigger on the mower yet.

I got one of the EGO trimmers as a Father’s Day gift it works great
Went out and got the edger. I did my entire front of the house in less than 10 mins and I’m on half and acre
Way better than that junk corded craftsman one I had
Definitely getting an EGO mower for next year

That was my journey. Gas weed eater/edger combo bit the dust last year so replaced with Ego. Bought an Ego hedge trimmer last fall. Got the Ego mower in early summer and just got the blower. Been very pleased with all of the Ego products.

quote:not a bad strategy. While the brushless motor will spin up to handle longer grass the price you pay is reduced battery life.

I haven't gone back to my toro yet mainly because it's a nightmare to get it to start but the ego does best when you don't let the grass get too long.

I will say this. I had some pretty out of shape blades that would crush my battery time on my EGO mower. Got some new ones and it went back to normal. This is definitely something to look out for if anyone does run into any issues. The mower had become louder as well, but that all changed after I got some brand new blades.
We have a lot of tree roots exposed so I've made a point to be more careful around. That's really the only negative I've experienced with my mower. My old Toro would just crush the root and stall out at the same time.

I got an EGO push mower last year for my birthday/Fathers Day. The only real hassle compared to gas is if I forget to charge the battery after mowing then have to wait on it to charge to cut the next time.
I also wonder how long it will hold up considering how much of it is plastic. I can't picture it lasting 20+ years like gas mower I replaced.

I bent the hell out of the main blade. It sounded like I was starting a P-51 Mustang every time I mowed. I tried bending it back to shape as best I could but it was noticeably louder.

How do you forget to charge the battery? First thing I do is stick the battery on the charger before I rinse off the mower and fold it up.
