I have Ryobi tools, among other stuff. I find it to hit the sweet spot for power tools I might need a few times as a homeowner, but don't need to count on for a living.
Cheaper than Dewalt or Milwaukee, better than the Black and Decker crap.
So, Home Depot for me.

Lowe’s. It’s easier to get in and out.

I'm in Metairie, and it all depends on what you need for me. Lowe's on Vets is a well run store and is closest to my house, so assuming they show stock before I leave my house, I usually head there. they always have liquid chlorine in stock, where the Home Depot in Elmwood is often out. Home Depot in Kenner has the best stock out of all of the big boxes in the NOLA metro, so I end up there sometimes getting things I can't get at Metry Lowe's or Elmwood HD.
none of them have employees worth a shite
ETA: I generally do not shop at either for electrical, plumbing, lumber, lighting or hardware. there are plenty of locally owned options staffed by knowledgeable individuals in all of those categories

Unfortunately, Home Depot is closer. I have no cell signal in that store. I find Lowe's to be superior in every way though. I also like Sutherland's better than Home Depot.

I think it depends on the management of the store.
The Lowes on Siegen is a clusterfrick. Good luck trying to find somethign specific. I think when they get inventory in, they just go to the bins and randomly put screws and what not in whatever drawer is empty, same for the plumbing section. You have to have really good luck to find somethign specific when it comes to screw hardware and plumbing pieces at that Lowes.
The Lowes by Cortana is better organized.
The Home Depot on Coursey is way too fricking crowded the majority of the time.
I like the Home Depot on Highland for most normal things. Lowes has better pool products and more of them, and i like their garden section a little better. I think Home Depot has more lumber, although if i still lived in the LP, i'd go to Stine if i wanted lumber.

Depends on what you're buying. Lowes has nicer "pretty things up" items, ie bathroom and lighting fixtures, outdoor furniture, shelving, etc. HD is better for most do it yourself projects, wood, tools, construction materials, etc.
TBH, I go with whatever one is closer. HD closer to work. Lowes closer to home.

Said anyone and everyone that lives by or goes to HD.

Always deal with local when I can. Luckily we have a local store that is like a Home Depot. They even have a dept that mainly deals with contractors on big projects. You can go sit down with them and they can tell what you need in any situation and how to fix it. Most of them are retired Baws people that have worked in home improvement and stuff. They can always answer any question you have. In HD or Lowe's if you can find someone to help it it is usually some damn college or high school kid and good luck with that.

I end up helping people half the time at the big box stores while their employees stand there

Lowe's. They have a blanket 10% veteran discount on all purchases. HD has no discount.

Um... what?
They caught some guys stealing tools.
Dudes bolted towards garden to escape.
All of a sudden the cashier closes the gate and locks it. I’m confused but then come the two guys running out being chased. Then they locked the door back into the store.
Eventually they found the fire escape and got out with the stuff they were stealing but I didn’t much appreciate the store policy of trapping them in an enclosed area with other customers over some cheap arse Memorial Day sale items.
