Hi Team, the microwave went on the fritz the other day and repairman says it would be cheaper to buy a new one. Fridge is about 15 years old as well, so I'm thinking about just getting a whole new set...fridge, dishwasher, stove, and microwave. Apparently spring/summer is a good time to buy.

A lot more players in the appliance game these days...so who is any good? I'm thinking about spending maybe $3k-$3.5k for the set. Not a ton, but I'm not planning to live here more than maybe two more years. Will most definitely avoid GE because that is the microwave that just died after 3 years.

How about Samsung, LG, Whirlpool, Maytag?

You'll probably get opinions across the spectrum. My Samsung fridge is a piece of shite, but I'm sure others love theirs.

Not Samsung. I’ve got a few whirlpool appliances and so far so good.

Pretty much all appliances are made to break at some point. Companies pretty much aim for their appliances to last 10 years, its considered a sweet spot for them. It's long enough for them to be considered reliable but doesn't go too long before you have to buy their product again.

Whirlpool (i think) has the tightest bell curve on this 10 yr mark of the big brands. You're most likely to make it to 10 before replacing but once you pass that, you're on borrowed time.

That being said I love my Whirlpool set I got for a new construction this fall.

Lowes, Home Depot, and Best Buy all have sales going on right now btw so it's a good time to buy.

My Samsung fridge is fricking legit. We're at the one year mark and I still love it.

GF was saying that whirlpool is going under because of Sears bankruptcy but i just care about good quality. I think i like the idea and look of Samsung but can't shake the perception of them as the phone and tv company.

Had it 5 years. The coil heater broke 3 years in. Huge hassle to get it diagnosed and fixed, and of course wasn't covered by warranty... neither ice maker has worked for over a year. Haven't gotten it fixed to avoid dealing with what we went through before.

Hurt a bit, sure. But going under? Definitely not. Whirlpool, Maytag, kitchen aid, and Jennifer-air are all under Whirlpool Corp, they aren’t going anywhere for a while.

For that budget you can probably get whirlpool gold set. Go to AJ Madison and look at their package deals. If you call them ask for Solomon Lewis he’ll usually work you a little off their advertised price. He’s taken care of my projects and clients for years.

The stock’s ticker is WHR.
They also own Maytag, Jenn-Air, Kitchen-Aide, and a bunch more.

You could also consider Bosch.

We bought a GE profile fridge a little over a year ago and have a GE microwave that’s been good for the past 5 or so years.

I would not consider either Samsung or LG for a fridge based on their type of compressor.

Also, if you want a package of appliances, Costco will be very hard to beat price wise and selection.

Thanks for the suggestion, but i'm in Chicago.

I've heard from a few people now that Samsung is probably not the best route. Helpful stuff.

The GE profile line is what's in my condo. They're about 15 years old and still kicking which is a credit to them but the GE microwave i mentioned kicked the bucket after 3 years so i'm a little gun shy on them

This. I've got a GE Profile... replaced the ice maker 3 times and have given up on it. It's turned off and we just get sonic ice or grocery store ice a few times a week.

Everything is pretty OK these days but Samsung fridges are terrible. They had a good run of fridges up until like 5-8 years ago. Now most of their fridges, at least the higher end ones, are just plain crap.

Absolutely avoid the ones with the ice chest located within the fridge compartment. The ice chest in the fridge door is OK but the ice chest actually back in the fridge storage area is not. They have a design flaw that cannot be fixed which causes regular freezing/leaking of the ice maker.

This is probably a stupid question with a simple answer, but why would they put the ice chest somewhere other than the freezer section? Wouldn't that mean you'd have to keep the fridge section colder than you otherwise would so the ice would stay frozen? Hence the "regular freezing/leaking" issue. Just seems dumb.

I have a Whirlpool Washer/Dryer front load set that I bought new in 2009. Still running perfectly.

I just moved and bought a new fridge- KitchenAid 5 door, so far so good. Keeps things cold and is quiet. I had a Whirlpool Gold fridge for years and never had a problem.

My brother bought LG Washer/Dryer at Best Buy a few years ago and had nothing but trouble.

I also bought a house a few years ago that had a Samsung fridge, it never got cold enough and was noisy.
