I've googled this extensively and I can't get a clear answer

On another note I changed out my air filter today while the fan was running and there seemed to be an unusual amount of suction. It's ceiling mounted and essentially sucked the new filter right in place.

Thanks in advance if anyone has any suggestions on what the issue might be

That’s pretty normal in my experience.

Mine always sucks the filter in when I change it. Never lived in a place that didn't. The return is supposed to do that

Following as I have a similar issue. Has it always been like this or just started? It’s just a loud whooshing noise associated with air velocity as its sucked through the return plenum?

What type of air filter are you using in your return? Is it a 1 inch thick filter? Are you using a low MERV (4) fiberglass filter in your return grill, as opposed to a high MERV pleated filter, if not try one to see if it helps.

What size is your filter and what is the tonnage of your HVAC?

Assuming it’s not a mechanical type noise, you could have high static pressure caused by some factor such as insufficient air return area (size) relative to the size of the HVAC, blower fan speed in air handler set too high, collapsed air duct, etc.

How much noise to you have at your return plenum grill where the filter is located? You can download Decibel X on your smartphone (free version) to get a sound decibel reading for comparison to noise at supply registers and a quiet room noise when AC is not running and no one speaking. For example a quite room with AC not running will have a sound level of about 35-40 decibels. Noise at my return plenum where the filter is located is about 75 dB. Noise at my supply registers when AC running is about 45-50 dB.

ETA: Last Aug I got an estimate to replace my 14 year old HVAC system (haven’t done so yet) and first thing the HVAC sales rep asked when he walked in the house is if my HVAC system was always this loud.

Is the outside unit getting loud or the inside unit?

My first thought as well. That squirrel cage probably has a lot of dust on it. Bitch to clean.

Inside, outside?

Sound like a banging or a squeal?

Banging inside - fan
Squeal inside - bearing on the motor or motor itself.

squirrel cage could be caked with dust. no longer aerodynamic and making noise. if so, need to take care of that or it will bust the cage.

bearings could be going bad in fan motor.

return could be too small for the air handler. if this is the case, you will see condensation buildup on the outside wall of the airhandler in the attic because there isnt enough air moving across the coil.

or, it could be none of these and something totally different

Yes that's how I would describe the noise

It doesn't quite sound like a banging noise but there is a rhythmic gust every second or so that I just started to notice a few days ago. At first I thought maybe it was the wind making noise because it is often very windy here but it's happening in the absence of any significant wind

Definitely not a squealing noise

That's how I felt when I started googling it

None of the noises really described what I'm hearing

It almost sounds like you're listening to a heartbeat or something
