To piggy back off of my dropping a cable line thread. Now that I have decided to go wireless, I will simply mount the TV straight to the wall. I want to hang a 55" tv on my back patio wall. The wall has plywood covered with Hardi Plank. What is the best way to do this? Is there a trick to finding the studs? What if there are no studs where I want to hang it? I doubt the Hardi Plank and plywood is strong enough to hold it, right? Thanks.

Assuming it’s a lightweight LED or LCD tv, the plywood will hold it. drill a pilot hole through just the hardi board and use #10 wood screws.

Use atleast 6 screws spread across the bracket to spread the load and not risk a screw trying to pull out because I’m sure the plywood is OSB and not real plywood.

3/4 plywood will hold it fine. That’s what we use for most in-wall blocking.

The plywood will be fine for these light tvs.

I’d drill a pilot fir sure though.

The thickest part of hardi siding is about 5/8" and the almost certainly osb sheathing is ~1/2". thats 1 1/8" plus whatever thickness your mount is which I'd guess is 1/8". So 1.5 is just about right with a 1/4 to spare. Like the other poster said, use all the screw holes and the osb will be just fine.

Toggle bolts will support something much heavier.

If your hardi plank was installed correctly the butt joints of the hardi plank will be staggered and will line up on studs

Personally I would try to hit at least one stud by going off where the butt joints are but as others have said, toggle bolts through the hardi and OSB/ plywood will be more than strong enough

These for example are rated at 265 pounds each in 1/2” drywall. in your setup the strength would be significantly more

I used these for mounting a tv on hardi plank at my previous house and they worked like a champ

Mine is hung with lag screws into the plywood only. No problems even through Ida

Like this?

I blocked around all my tv/fiber outlets but if not, I would use these.

If you have plywood behind the hardy hang it wherever. Even a 55” tv weighs nothing. No need to hit a stud

Where exactly do you plan on him threading the plastic anchor, in a plank that’s 5/16” thick? Or do you expect him to install drywall anchors in plywood?

OP, please don’t listen to this advice
