Has anyone had any luck establishing a Bat House?

Big Bat Box

I just bought one for my Dad last week (early Father's Day gift) while I was on vacation at my parent's place. Damn rural route delivery was delayed, so I wasn't able to help Dad put it up.

They have a couple of bats that we've see fairly often at night thru the years, so we know they're around. Just a matter of getting them to colonize there.

FWIW, this is a 3-chamber brown bat barn from BigBatBox.com.

All cedar and well-constructed. Just based on that alone, I'd buy again.

Vented to alleviate overheating issues. Grooves cut inside and out for better gripping as the bats hang.

Parents have 15 acres out in the country. North central AR area. Obviously all kinds of critters and bugs around, but no real pest problems. It was something Dad wanted and it doesnt hurt to have some insurance against skeeters finally figuring out where they live.

Let me know how it works out for you.

I see bats frequently early in the morning. This may be why I have very few mosquitoes. But I saw more mosquitoes last year than the previous years.

I may need to check into how and where to mount a bat house at. I have two lots totaling about 3/4 of an acre. One lot is still wooded and I am surrounded by woods.

How do these work? Are they the constructed in a way that keeps birds from taking over instead of bats?

Yes. Only bats can get a grip on the smoothishest walls and hang upside down. No place for a bird to roost anyway.

put the bat house on the trunk of a large tree about 12-14’ high, on the south facing side. Bats like it warm in the house even in summer.

Bats you see most often are much smaller than you’d think, about the size of a mouse. It may take years for them to move in but at least nothing else can use it besides wasps in the meantime

Did you load it with bat guano paste? Mix a little water and bat guano and rub it on the entrance. It still won’t happen overnight though.

What would keep the wasp from taking over the house?

Bats don’t care about wasps
