Bought a brand new Gravely this spring. 52 inch ZT HD. Well the last few cuts, the engine loses power while cutting almost to the point it wants to kill the engine. I also notice a slight gas smell, almost if it’s burning rich. I’d compare it to me trying to cut while the choke is on, but of course that is not the case. Then all of a sudden it kicks in full throttle. I’m noticing it’s doing the more frequent. Confused what it could be.

Kawasaki? You can tell the engine loses power and it’s not hydraulics or blades?

Easy answer if it’s new is to bring it to the dealer for warranty repair.

Could be a few things. My gravely kawa lost power and started running super rough after it bent a rod. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize it was only a bent push rod until after I bought a new motor and started to tear down the old one.

Sounds like it is starving for fuel to me. Change filters and see what happens.

If it's brand new, bring it to the dealer to get looked at.

Is it the Kawasaki, Kohler or Gravely engine. I bought same machine with the gravely engine which is made in China which I figured was a Honda knock off. Engine is strong but when I put gas in it and start to cut again it does same thing your engine is except sometimes it shuts off completely and I have to restart w/o any choke. Dealership in Lafayette blew me off and reset valve clearance but still does same thing.

Also have had starter issues.

Bad ignition coil pack will do that. I fought for a year trying to figure it out. Very intermittent.

Why would the ignition coil be effected by fuel fill ups?

Makes me think air/carb issues.

Check air filter, or stuck float in carb?

Ignition coil check has to be done when loss of power happens. Pull on spark plug wire at a time

You are losing a cylinder...when it happens...pull off one spark plug wire at a time and try to crank it. It will run on one cylinder so it should start with one wire off...the one it won't start on (with it's wire off) is the good one. It will tell you which one to look closer at.

You smell gas because unburnt gas is coming from the misfiring cylinder.

As others have said...this should be a warranty issue.

You can also check temps of the manifold coming from each cylinder to the muffler. If it's been running for a minute, compare temperatures using a laser thermometer or spraying water on the manifold.

they recommend changing both coils out. damn things are pricey. the ones on my 25hp Koelher were about $180 for the pair, but i changed them myself. so if under warranty go that route.
