I have a quote to replace the outside unit and the heater because fed regs says they have to match. The compressor is shot. 8k to have installed Thursday.

Lots of factors in that.

What’s your location?
I replaced all 3 of my units the past few years.
Last was a 4 ton
I did a Carrier 16 seer and it was $13k if I remember correctly.

I got a Bryant 2.5 ton for $6K. 2 ton for 4-5K. Heat pumps. minimum seer standard (can't remember that number).

standard warranty coverage.

That sounds like a fair price. I have a 3 ton unit being replaced tomorrow in small town Morgan City - just the outside condensing unit (Trane Seer 2 14) and matching cased evaporator coil, $5700.

The furnance is not being replaced as it’s only 8 years old and heat exchangers are warranted for 20 years. But if you added a new furnace to that unit the cost would be $8K.

P.S. The old unit is R-22, being replaced with R410A system.

replace the whole system. if its r22 the energy savings alone will pay for it in 15 years.

$2k a ton is a good average and add an extra $1-2k if all the ductwork is replaced as well. if i were doing it, i go all new everything except the ceiling boxes. and if you have the old style round grills then replace those as well.

so to answer your question, $6k-$8k but anything under $10k isnt bad the way inflation is

Is keeping r22 equipment and re charging with r407c an option? Ideally I would replace the compressor only. Compressor terminal plug on my 3.5 ton blew out, compressor gone pecone.

no, you cant mix them, the pressures that they work on are way different, and the wax inside the oils the freon uses turns into lard like stuff when you mix it.

the age alone is worth a total replace, good efficiency r22 systems will average 8-10 seer at best, the lowest scale new systems are double that

You should always get 3 quotes if not 5-6 OP. I’ve said this a lot on this board, schedule a morning or afternoon and have 5-6 quotes done. Just do them every 30 mins or so, it only takes 10 mins or so for a quote. Tell them you are getting multiple if you want.

You’ll get quotes that are $5k apart, there’s a big mark up in new units.

Wrong. I have a 4 ton R22 Nordyne split system A/C that is 14.5 seer. Two compressors, one is 1.5 tons, the other 2.5 tons. The inside air handler unit is 5 tons, variable speed, with heating coils. Either or both compressors operate based on indoor, outdoor (thermistor), and set point temperature. The outside condenser has a dual coil.

you’re saying no way? Because the R22 has been completely vented.

I wonder if high resistance at the terminal plug caused my blowout? I had no idea there was a plug on the compressor.

That's fine, that's just to allow them to not run into each other. I mean you are right, but I've done it many times and it works just fine.
