Reminder, as A/C may be used this weekend, get your standby capacitor and switch now for your condenser. Two of the cheapest and easiest fixes you can do yourself for an A/C condenser.

Just for clarification, by “switch” I assume you mean the “contactor”. Second most common repair on outside condensing units, capacitor being #1, and fan motor being #3.

My AC has a 35 amp contactor which I can't find, do I use a 30 amp or a 40 amp as a substitute?

Always go up in size for contactors.

On caps you can go to a higher voltage rating but never a lower.

If you have a newer high efficiency unit, make sure your contactor isn't built in to the main circuit board.

My A/C guy said to do this only in an emergency. Get the correct size for your unit.

It doesn't matter going up the only thing changing is the insulation inside.

Can someone tell me how do I check to see what kind of capacitor to buy? Will I electrocute myself if I pop the panel off the condenser and look inside to see what's in there now?

No, you shouldn’t electrocute yourself by removing the panel. .. just don’t touch any of the connections.
Once the panel is removed, you should be able to see the markings on the side of the capacitor. At that point, just take a picture of it.

Changing out these parts is not rocket science. I have rentals and do this frequently.

But you can kill yourself if you don't remove the power from the outside unit. Capacitors can blow up if hooked up wrong. You can also blow the fuse on the circuit board in the air handler very easy changing out a capacitor if the thermostat is not turned off.

If you are not comfortable around electricity, hire a professional or call a friend that knows what's up.
