While I was bored waiting on Barry, I did some internet searching and came across "Quiet Boxes" for generators. I have never heard of them before, and I just can't seem to get my head around them being safe. There seems to some real ones out there Zombie Box, there are also countless other plans out there for DIY.

It just seems like enclosing your generator and limiting the amount of space and air flow is a recipe for disaster, but I admit, I don't know a lot about it. A lot of them use some type of insulation, which seems like would only contribute to the danger. From the videos out there, it does seem to help with noise, doesn't eliminate. On one hand, could save some money by taking my loud one and making it more bearable, but on the other hand, wouldn't have a reason to get a quiet one like I want but don't use enough to justify.

Has anyone seen or used one before?

Zombie Box

$2000

If anyone is throwing that kind of money at a portable generator box they're insane. You can get a whole house generator for the cost of your portable one and that box.

OP

I built one out of 3/4" plywood, painted it,insulated with foil lined insulation and connected an old motorcycle muffler to the pipe coming out of the cylinder head. I installed the muffler on the outside and installed 2 water proof fans that I got at Grainger on both sides of the box for ventilation. The front wall is hinged and just drops down so that i can pull the generator out whenever i need to do something with it.

I just put mine away from my house, and surround it loosely by plywood on three sides. Seems to work fine

RVs and Boats have generators in tight enclosed spaces and manage the air flow and exhaust

My main concern was having it closed up even with the vents/fans. Like I said, don't know a ton about small engines but just felt like restricting air flow would be harmful.

I certainly wasn't going to pay $$ for one of the Zombie Boxes, would do a DIY. The more I think of it, having it is a box type enclosure would work good for a storage dilemma too.

inside the recoil assembly for the generators motor is a fan that draws air in to cool the motor. I focused one fan blowing into the face of the recoil and another fan behind the generator to draw the air out. Works fine.

Seem like the safety issue you are having with it would be self limiting since a lack of airflow would cause the engine to die.

I'll check tomorrow at work, but generator companies have a recommended distance available on the exhaust side. Something like 1.5x the generator height.

Personally I think it's dumb. The rare occasions that you'll use the generator, you'll just be happy to have a/c and won't give a shite about the noise. Only buildings I've worked on that have used legit sound suppression (ie putting it in a separate brick building) on a gen are hospitals.

I built one way back when after Gustov. I was in an apartment and it sat on my patio. I built it out of 2" Fiberglass duct board and extended the exhaust 4' out. Like others, I had 2 fans for air cooling. It cut the noise WAY down and several neighbors enjoyed some cooling and lights for the 2 weeks we were without power. This was for a Briggs 8500 watt gennie that was LOUD. It ran almost constantly for 2 weeks straight without a problem. We all took turns buying gas and keeping it running.

Sound attenuated enclosure is the proper term if you want to find listed and quality products for a generator.
