Generator issue - please help

Generator wouldn't start so I figured it was the carburetor. Cleaned it out and it started fine. Put it away and then went back to it to make sure it started again. This time it didn't.
Replaced the spark plug, nothing. Replaced the gas, nothing.
I'm unfamiliar with mechanic stuff so I'm sure there's something I'm missing here. Why would it run for a few minutes after cleaning the carburetor but won't anymore?

what kind of generator and what brand, HP motor?

It's a Briggs & Stratton. I'm not sure of HP.

how long had the old gas sat in the fuel tank in the generator? Was there old gas in it? Did you empty the old gas out before adding new gas in? Is the coil wire sparking to the plug when you're cranking the unit?

A year

Yes

Talk to me like I'm 5. How can I tell if that happens when I try to crank it up?

Unscrew the spark plug and plug it back into the wire that was connected, while it’s unscrewed. Pull the rope and watch the plug to see if there is a spark.

My first thoughts is that you had some gas or cleaner initially in the carb after cleaning that allowed it to start the first time that burned up and wasn’t there the second time and you’re still not getting gas to the engine. Did you unscrew the jets and clean them and pull off the float and clean that hole?

squirting carb cleaner isnt "cleaning a carb"
the float is stuck again because the carburetor has varnish in it.
soak it overnight in berrymans chem dip and then clean it again with the spray can and this time clean the float seat with q-tip and rub the float needle well to remove the varnish
or just buy a new carb on ebay for $10 and be done with it, its so cheap to buy new carbs now that its not even worth your time trying to clean one

take the spark plug out, connect the coil wire to the plug, make sure the metal part of the plug is grounded to metal anywhere on the motor and have someone pull start and see if a blue electrical spark comes from the plug gap. Do not hold the plug with your hand, hold the wire while doing this. I'm just making sure it's not a carb issue. If no spark then the on /off switch may be bad or the low oil switch is bad or you might not have enough oil in it. Eliminate spark before moving to the carb issue.

Should of told him to have his SO hold the plug wire.

OP
Just some advice for the future. Once you get it running, let it run for a little while and turn the gas off and let it keep running until it dies. This gets most/all gas out of the carb so it’s not just sitting full while in storage. I have a couple different size generators that I do this with. I start them up every couple of months and never seem to have any issues.
Also, like someone said above. Just buy a new carb. They’re cheap.

Don't forget to drain the bowl. It's just one bolt

So, I filled up my generator with new ethanol free gas. Filled it with stabil. Let it run for 5 minutes to make sure stabil fully entered everywhere. Is it better to cut fuel off and let it run dry or keep everything full? Plan to keep it like that until hurricane season is done.

There is less chance of the tank rusting out if you leave it full of treated fuel.

best thing is leave it full with stabilizer.
