Gas Dryer not Getting Hot
Posted on 4/23/26 at 8:47 pm

Did a load of laundry and put it in the gas dryer. I noticed clothes were not dry when I took them out. I ran the dryer again and raised the temperature. I went to take clothes out after running dryer for some time and noticed they were not hot. Appears dryer is only getting warm and not hot. Suggestions on what is wrong.

It may be the thermal fuse or heating element. Both are easy to change.
You can buy a repair kit on Amazon for about $30 with both parts and watch a YouTube vid for your specific dryer.
Once you find out what part has failed, go buy the actual replacement from the manufacturer of your dryer. The generic one on Amazon will likely fail within a few months.
There may be another way to determine if the thermal fuse has failed or the heating element has but the old trial and error method worked for me.

This is how a gas dryer works.

I would suspect that airflow through the dryer is inadequate causing some overheat safety feature to be activated before the clothes totally dry.
Have you cleaned the lint screen?
Does air come out of the exhaust vent outside of the home when the dryer is running?

You'll have to trouble shoot it, but the last time my dryer stopped drying, it was the gas solenoids that went bad.
It was a cheap and easy fix.

Yes, first thing I checked.

A couple of ideas:
- I'll assume that the drum is turning, which means the drive motor is OK, which also drives the fan blade for drying air.
- Start the dryer and listen for the burner to light off (a "whoof" sound). If it doesn't light off, then it's a gas valve/solenoid or thermal cut-out issue.
- Go to Repair Clinic and look for your specific model dryer. They usually have good advice on common issues, and of course they also sell the parts to fix the problem.

It's been this more time than not on my dryers.

Make sure you clean that vent pipe really good. I had air coming out of a 6 ft run but wasn't enough air flow, so safety feature shuts heat off after a short time.
I used my leaf blower and blew it out while running a cleaning tool through to knock off stuck lint. Was a ton more stuck in there than I realized.

It’s often times the thermal fuse, but I think the thermal fuses go bad because of the lint build up

Just another thing to check. Last time I had this problem (albeit electric dryer) there was some carbon build up on the contacts in the timer. Cleaned them up and adjusted the contacts ever so slightly and that fixed the issue for me.
Here’s a good video on that.

Those that are saying the thermal fuses...
my dryer is electric so it may be different, but mine would not turn on at all when the thermal fuse went out a few months ago.

Thankfully I am the only one at home, I can go more than a week without having to wash/dry clothes.

I'm not an appliance guy but I've had to replace them on multiple different dryers, I can tell you that they are different. Some of them as you said are made to where it cuts the power to the circuit board, others it just cuts the power to the heating element. My current one it cuts the power to the heating element, its annoying. Doesn't even throw a code.

I felt this was obligatory.
