Garage Storage- Give me some ideas
Posted on 2/12/20 at 5:46 pm

So I'm wanting to completely redo my garage and better organize my stuff. I need some ideas.
Right now I've got a combination of ceiling-mounted racks, open-wire racks and various hanging hooks on the wall.
My goal is to get everything in cabinets on the wall. Behind doors/ drawers to keep things clean from dust and organized. Also would like cabinets either completely on the floor, or up off the floor a foot or so; to make for easier cleaning. Basically I'd like to open the garage and not see anything but cabinets.
Any suggestions on storage systems that aren't ridiculously expensive?
I don't want to use plywood to build them because of the time and expense. Would consider melamine, but haven't worked with it and worry about the holding strength of joints.
Any thoughts or suggestions?

Cabinets are fairly easy to build.

I made mine out of osb. 4x8 sheets are pretty cheap.

I agree. Just not sure i'm up for building any right now
Mainly I don't want to sand, paint/stain/finish. Which is why I was considering melamine. But I have concerns about it's strength as I've never built with it before.

Melamine is plenty strong, use it for shelving in my shop. The coated surface really shines with spills.
I've got plans to do ceiling mounted struts to hang Rubbermaid storage containers for seasonal stuff.

I hear that. Just get the cabinet grade plywood and do a paint and primer in one since it's in the garage.

Check out Prepac Hangups at Home Depot online.

First you need to cull some stuff
You are a hoarder
Now dont take that the wrong way you have a lot of junk you need to get rid of we all do just look at all the stuff you are packing away & just get rid of it. If you pack it away no one will see it until you die sell is or trash it now.

While you may have a point, I've already gotten rid of enough stuff that cabinets would even be an option.

Is there a Habitat for Humanity Re-Store in your area? They sell kitchen cabinets that have been donated when someone does a remodel. Used cabinets are perfect for a garage!

Yes I think so, good idea I hadn't thought about that. Been searching craigslist but need to look here as well.

you talking about a garage not your damn kitchen here
go to craigs list or facebook marketplace and buy up all the old cabinets you can find, it can take a while but before long you will have enough to fill every bit of wall space, then just paint them with a brush and you are done.
i found a great deal on generic locker room cabinets that came out of a fire house and i got enough of them to stack them wall to ceiling for tons of storage and they only cost me $10 a cabinet. habitat for humanity sells used cabinets as well but they want like $35 each for them

The corner cabinet is on linear actuators and goes up and down to help utilize the corner space.

Amen to that. People hang onto the oddest things, and then spend lots of money housing their junk. Learn to let go...use, enjoy, and move on: give away, recycle, sell, share with someone in need. Americans have way way way too much crap.

Yes, Thanks. I have a storage room with pegboard on one side and industrial shelving on the other for the tools I don't use as much.
