Looking to replace carpet in a bonus room. Right now it's basically the kids' living room where they can watch TV, play with toys, build forts, and generally act like donkeys without tearing up the actual living room.

From a practical standpoint I'm leaning toward wood look luxury vinyl but from a retained value perspective I hate to spend money on LVT that could be spent on an engineered wood or bamboo floating floor instead.

Anybody have insight into lvt and engineered wood, or put one or the other down in a similar type of room? Are you happy with your decision or do you wish you went a different way?

Which product can be repaired/replaced the easiest if it gets gouged? That’s the one I’d get.

I’d put down vinyl and not look back. The new stuff looks awesome and takes a beating.

LVT is a great product and probably your best bet for a room like that. One thing to watch for in a bonus room is to make sure they level out the floor/subsurface. The LVT will show the waves/humps/dips more than the wood (but both will show).

I put down engineered wood throughout my house, including the bonus room. My buddy put down LVT. The LVT looks nice and is an upgrade from a laminate wood or other type flooring. His seems fairly scratch resistant too. We had a couple samples when we were picking out floors, and were able to scratch them easier than I expected. Between that and the appearance, we selected the wood.

Go cheap now and redo them for good when the kids move out

If you want to kid proof it, go with the LVT or a high quality porcelain.

Eng wood or bamboo--- scratched, and dented to death if your kids are anything like mine.

We had engineered wood put through most of my house, pecan wood to be exact about 10 yrs ago. It’s beautiful. We put vinyl wood look in master bedroom 2 yrs ago and I love it. The engineered wood took a beating from those pointed high heels before we noticed it. $10K vs $800.

That really depends on the wood. I took out carpet in 3 bedrooms and replaced with engineered Brazilian Cherry flooring and between the hardness of the wood and the finishing system used they are very hard and scratch resistant. Most quality engineered flooring uses an aluminum oxide based finish if it's a non-high gloss finish. I bought a diamond tipped miter saw blade for the work, carbide blades burn out quickly in the stuff.
