I’m in the market for a new vehicle, and my existing car has a cracked windshield. Should I pay to have it replaced before trading in or selling to carmax, etc?

Depends on how much they're going to ding you for it on the trade and if you're comfortable paying that much out of your pocket instead of rolling that amount into your loan.

They won't give you a higher trade for having a perfect windshield but will definitely give you a lower trade in if it's cracked.

If your trading in a 2006 Kia with 200K miles. I wouldn't get it fixed.

If your trading in a 2019 vehicle in good condition with low/avg mileage. I would get it fixed.

It is worth checking your insurance policy. I do not believe it counts as a claim like an accident, and it might cost $100 for a new windshield, which might be better than the hit you will get for any little issue.

No, def shop around first. I just had Honda of Covington tell me if I put new tires on my trade they would give me 24k, Slidell gave me 24.5k w the old tires. They were also 1k cheaper on the new car, win win.

Heck no.

Traded in the wife's car sight unseen a month ago.

If you are buying new let them pay to replace it.

Get enough of those "little" claims and places like State Farm will drop you in a heartbeat.

Last car I traded I was driving to TX to pick up new one. On the way caught a rock and crack spread about a foot. They docked me $1,500 on the trade (cost of the windshield). My insurance would have covered most of the cost, but I had already made a deal i was happy with. Super annoying

Depends on what you're trading in. If you're car is older than 7 years / over 100k miles it's probably going to auction and they won't care about your windshield that much.

Windshield manufacturers must have changed things over years as a money maker. I swear the older vehicles, you could take a tire rolling down I10 to the windshield and you wouldn't even get a scratch!

Don’t fix it. Take it to multiple places and go with the best offer.

Most dealerships have a collision repair shop so they’ll get a new windshield at cost and the labor cost would be less than market, too.

If it makes you feel better, get a quote on getting a new windshield installed. If a dealer says they would give you $xxx more if you had a good windshield, you can tell if they’re BS’ing you.

You can get an online quote from Safelite or others so you can know if the dealer or whoever is trying to stick it to you.
