A few times I've hired a guy to do landscape tasks like bed removal, bed installing, major pruning, etc. He's a very reliable local guy very experienced after years working for landscaping companies. Now he has suggested I hire him on a regular basis 1 or 2 days a month for 4 hrs to keep a quarter acre with several plantings in order. That's mostly weeding, mulching, pruning. That excludes grass.

I like the idea, but don't know what the pay should be. Right now I'm paying a crew of 3 Spanish speaking guys $60 to cut and trim the yard at breakneck speed.

First option is to ask him what his rate is.

I’ll do it for 100/day but I’ll probably plant weed and beautyberry all up your beds. Caveat emptor

Yard care prices have gone insane.. I contacted a guy about cutting my back yard and removing a medium sized dead shrub/bush.. I asked him to come take a look and give me an estimate.. He replied asking me to take pictures.. I should have stopped there.. So I sent him pics.. I'll admit the grass is way overgrown but it is the thin grass and a lawn tractor could easily cut it w/o a problem.. A vine had covered the shrub but I sprayed it and killed it.. So the guy responds the next day with a $400 estimate.. I laughed and replied no thanks... He came back with a slightly lower price and I didn't respond.. I ended up getting my weed eater and knocking down the grass in about 45 minutes.. As far as the shrub? I might cut it little by little or wait till cooler temps...
My philosophy is I don't mind people making a profit but I can't stand someone trying to make a killing...

Kind of funny how people think other people's labor should be dirt cheap but consider their own to be very valuable.

no we are not, and unless you are a first responder or medical professional you aren’t saving lives either. I wouldn’t get out of my truck for $400

You're going off a little less information than the gardener... If someone would offer me $400 to do this work I would be jumping out of my truck and I would do extra because I knew I was being over paid...

Soooooo this is the problem with America. Locals should work for the prevailing rate of a hispanic illegal. You used the word 'fair'. You be the judge. You want 'the work done'. Or, you want the work done right by an experienced local with knowledge. Sadly, the hispanic crews have put most honest working locals out of business. Just pray one doen't get injured while working on your project. Do the right thing. Hire local. Take care!

What percentage salary reduction did you offer in savings for your employer?

This is one of those instances where it’s only worth what you’re willing to pay for said service. And it’s more than likely going to be a bit more than what you think it should cost.
The service provider has the equipment, and some knowledge, so they have a bit of an upper hand on you, but still needs to charge a rate that is satisfactory for both parties.
Example: A few years back I purchased a pressure washer and surface cleaner, total cost for both was $1100. My son started cleaning people’s houses in my neighborhood. He quoted one neighbor $350 to do his house. Neighbor told him “Come do it for me, the next closest bid to yours was $600.”
He has since cleaned that house a total of 4 times. That 1 neighbors business has paid for my entire set up.
Moral here…charge a rate that both parties are happy with and you’ll stay working.
