I figure I could get spare oil and filters for a fraction of the cost rather than buying from the installer. What oil and filters do yall keep on hand as backup during hurricane season?

I like to put Quaker State Ultra Duty in all of my air cooled 4 stroke equipment.

End of the day it's just an air cooled v twin.

Really, the most important thing is to use a quality synthetic oil. Mobile 1, Valvoline, Penzoil, Castrol, Quaker State... Any of these are fine as long as it is synthetic.

100% agree on synthetic, with the start and stops and intermittent use it’s the only thing I use in mine.

Yep. And the immediate hitting of 3600 RPM on a cold start, then running potentially for days on end. I get my dealer to do the maintenance (mostly due to my time constraints) and they he mentioned that their customers have few mechanical problems since they switched 100% to synthetic.

All of my air cooled equipment and generators get 15w-40 diesel oil.
Generator wise I have several units and have had no issues in thousands of combined hours.

I’m in La, if in colder areas I would recommend the 10-30 diesel oil.

15-40 diesel oil is what is in Onan’s Onamax oil which they recommend for all their air cooled generators. It is all we have run in the RV and it has over 3000 hours. Rotela or equivalent is much cheaper than the overpriced green label oil, and just as good. 1800 vs 3600, but I heard it is also recommended in their portables that run at 3600 too. Also have a 93 15KW standby air cooled and a 72 35KW water cooled. All run 15-40, all have had no issues. I change the oil yearly, regardless of hours. Napa should be able to cross the filter for you too.

Isn’t the Generac engine just a Kohler clone?

Changing the oil on a Generac 22 is the easiest oil change I have.

Read your manual for the weight. I think it is 5w20. I bought the filter from Amazon. It was a generac filter.

Same. 15-40 diesel oil is great for high temperature and long runs.

Air cooled engines expand and contract more than liquid cooled and thus have greater clearances in critical areas. There is no way a 5W20 oil is going to protect an air coooled engine under that kind of load. I agree with others that say they used 15W40. Especially in Louisiana during summer.
