Got drunk at my ranch and burned a massive pile of brush down one night. Stayed up until 3 am watching it burn down to nothing. Went to bed got up and checked it in the am and still looked like it was completely out. Was laying around on the couch watching movies and my uncle called me to tell me the pasture was on fire.
The wind had picked up and it caught some grass on fire. Jumped on tractor and started fire lanes until the fire department showed up. We took one end with shovels on the back end and the firefighters took the end they way the wind was blowing. Knocked it out pretty quick.

Used a fire extinguisher in my house once.
Might let it burn down next time.

They used gasoline to start it, didn’t they?

Tell him to beat them to their punch and make a $500 donation to the department or send in a pile of bbq.

Yep! Burning trash during grinding. Left and get calls on a scanner that there was a fire in the woods heading towards a fuel plant! Hauled arse trying to get there and could see the large glow in the darkness, thought to myself, oh frick I’m about to be on CNN!!

Back when I lived the neighborhood life I set my yard on fire new years with a sparkler. Perfect storm, dry, windy, 20 degrees (hoses frozen).
It caught a newspaper that was wrongly delivered to my house on fire, wind blew it, and it jumped the driveway. Got it out with stomping boots and a rake before the fire department showed up.
If it is even slightly breezy, I don't burn anything anymore. I burn boxes on occasion in a burn barrel, I basically won't do it unless it has rained that day or is actively raining. Super paranoid.

The fire department came out and had it under control after about 10 minutes.
To give them some credit, it sounds like they called the fire department fairly quickly (I am guessing the wife). I am only saying this because far too many people wait too long to call for help when they need assistance.
I don't know where they were, but fire ban or not, I would not burn when it is this dry. Let the birds enjoy the brush piles for a while. And as CAD said, always have a water hose at the site and ready to go.

The neighbor said that the fire captain told him to expect a bill for their services.
Hell yeah.
Neighbor should know if there is a red flag before burning. Saying you didnt know is a weak arse excuse.

Also, if you can get the number to your local firehouse just tell them what's up.
I call and tell them my address, time frame I'll be burning and my extinguish method.
My brother has been a firefighter for 20+ and told me to do this. He said they'll write that down on the dry erase board for the shifts.
Those guys don't like walking into something unexpected if they don't have to.

I had one get away from me here years ago. I was burning a fair size brush pile. We had had light rain for the past two days so I figured I could just get it kind of smoldering and let it burn slow.
I went inside my shop to work on something for about an hour (my fault all the way) and when I came out to check on it it had creeped over into my neighbor's pine tree lot and the needles were going. What the hell, the ground was fairly damp.
I ran to call the county FD.
Well it was a holiday for sure. My place was behind a gate with a line of trees along the road, so I guess the fire dept guys figured it was a good chance to see what was back there. Guys showed up with their wives and kids in their vehicles and pretty soon there's redneck kids running all over and some of them were throwing a football. If they had known I had a pond I'm sure some of them would have brought fishing poles. Several of the wives stood around in clusters chatting and laughing. I could almost swear I saw a wine box.
The chief had the guys put on backpacks and they had it out in just a few minutes. One punk kid came up to me and said "It's too dry to be burning." I said boy it's been raining the last two days. I apologized profusely to the chief and thanked him profusely as well. I don't think anybody minded. They had a big time of it.
Once they were sure all clear they rounded up kids and everybody reluctantly got back in their vehicles and drove away.
I expected to get a bill in the mail but never heard anything else about it.
Life in rural Mississippi.

Was burning a small brush pile in January. I always pick low wind days but as soon as I lit, the wind came up. Grass started to burn which is normal and started managing the perimeter like always but in about thirty seconds, I was suddenly behind. I fought like hell but couldn't reign in so I finally called the FD. They came out with a field truck and had it out in about five minutes (3-4 acres). The humliating part was they fireman was a girl.
Still haven't lived that down.
Didn't get a bill.
