Drainage Problem for New Dishwasher

Hey guys, as the title states, I’m having issues with a brand new dishwasher not draining. Just purchased a new home earlier this month and replaced what I thought was an older malfunctioning dishwasher (received seller credit for new appliance purchase). The drain line ties into the garbage disposal; I’m assuming the disposal is clogged. However, I am not a plumber & I don’t want to start messing with piping & cause further issues. Any DIY tips before I have to call in a plumber? Thanks.

I'm no plumber either, but there are a ton of youtube videos on this. It is a very easy fix usually.
Who installed it for you? Did they not check the drain line?
Also, if the disposer is clogged, wouldn't the entire drain in the sink be clogged as well?

Installed myself. The inspector I used apparently chalked it up as a broken dishwasher instead of checking the drain components.
That was my thought as well. I’m not sure if there is a fan that acts as a suction or something to that effect?

Is the garbage disposal new too?
Is it working?
There is no suction fan in a disposal that helps clear. The food material is broken down and drains into the drain line.
Have you run the drain line from the dishwasher to the disposal to look for clogs?

Unhook the dishwasher drain line and run through a drain cycle with it discharging into a 5 gallon bucket. If it drains properly it's not a problem with the dishwasher.

No. Approx. 3 years old. It's in working order and the kitchen sink has no drainage issues.

There is a plug in all disposals that has to be knocked out to hook up a dishwasher drainage line. It's easy to check for and knock it out.
Was the last dishwasher hooked up to it? The guy before you may have no knocked out that disposal. plug
If so then, the drain line has to be clogged.

Yes it was hooked up. I know the home was renovated & added to the seller's rental portfolio in 2016; tenants may have never used it. I'll check for the plug, thanks.

See figure 2.9 on the following link. My son's line was clogging until we rerouted it with the loop.

As previous poster said, remove line from dishwasher and place in bucket and see if it drains. If you installed it, you should be able to look at the line to see if it is plugged.

If it's a new disposal it's likely no one knocked out the punch in the drain connection.
I see this a lot.
Also the dishwasher hose MUST be at one point routed above the lowest point of the sink to prevent back flow.

Make sure drain hose is higher then where it goes into disposal, if not water drains from sink back to disposal

Went through this exact scenario a month ago. Bought a new disposal and installed myself and totally forgot to punch out the plug in the disposal. Unfortunately, I didn't realize this until I had completely dismantled the dishwasher and cleaned all the parts.
