I just bought one. Fast growing shade tree with pretty fall colors. Just never really see any around my area. (Baton Rouge)
Supposed to grow just fine in this area and very hardy and wondering why more people don't have them.

They’re kinda shitty. They don’t have a long life and most of them look terrible.
Sugar Maples are better than Swamp Red or October Glory. Many times they end up getting blown down or disease after about 8-10 years.

That's not been my experience at all, and standard sugar maples do not do well here at all. I had 2 Southern Sugar Maples at my last house that did really well, but my understanding is that the guy that propagates them stopped so they're a little hard to come by now. I put 3 Florida Flame maples at my new house and I'm only one season in, but they were beautiful in the fall. They're also very dense. I'm excited to see how they do over the coming years.

There are beaucoup swamp red maples (var. drummondii) found natively all around there. The bottomlands and swamps are chock-full of 'em. Like millions of them are in the area. Most people don't ever notice them other than one week in November. A few more people will notice them in spring when they start to flower. I always liked seeing them on very early spring drives between New Orleans and BR. The whole understory of the swamps around Maurepas would be full of their tiny, red flowers. It always reminded me of the redbuds from where I grew up in TN.
They do not do well in the late summer heat if you get a dry spell. They're easily stressed. Keep them well watered in the heat.
Florida Flame, Autumn Flame, and October Glory used to be the common ones grown in the nursery trade in the area back when I was in that line of business 15 years ago. Not sure if better ones have come out.

You will cuss the leaves when they fall.

I got the red sunset.
I was hoping it would be the red color for longer than a week though.
Maybe I haven't noticed because I really haven't looked. Being mid February I hope it's not too late to plant it. I don't think it is at least.

You take whatever fall color you get in South Louisiana

Have one 3’ tall, popped up in a flower bed, debating on whether to transplant to more desirable location.

Better make sure you cut the roots good before you planted it. I’m about to have to cut one down of 10 years that killed itself because of girdling roots

just planted one a few weeks back in my yard on my property. I'm in a bottomland hardwood area, so it should do well.

That's a beautiful tree and exactly what I'm looking for out of mine eventually. How old is that one?

thanks. it was about 4-6 foot tall when I planted it around 15 years ago.
the leaves are not very aerodynamic and I have had a few big limbs fall victim and snap with some of our high wind events over the years, but I just cut them away and it keeps growing away.

Maples are fantastic. I've never had any issues with any maple I've planted. Of course they may lose a tree limb in a storm, but any tree is susceptible to that.
They provide excellent shade, good growth, nice fall colors for the South.
BTW, my FIL is from New Orleans and he hates maples, such as another poster.
Maybe they don't do as well along the coast

I have never had a maple survive for more than a few years....just not a deep south tree.
