Do I need a heat pump if I have a gas furnace?

I will be replacing my HVAC soon. I like my gas furnace, but the government is pushing heat pumps.
I would go heat pump without hesitation if I had electric heat.
Which is more economical to operate? Thoughts?

Stay with gas, more economical. It also will still be hot when it really cold outside.

That shouldbe all the answer you need right there.

Depending on your cost of electricity vs natural gas you could save money with a heat pump. How long it would take to make the ROI is another matter. My fiancée's mother is terrified of natural gas, insisted that the perfectly good furnace be replaced with a heat pump with a 20kW heat kit. First big cold plunge and the system predictably failed and they were running kerosene and space heaters. My fiancée spent over $40,000 fixing that mess eventually. My house has two NG furnaces, I will never go to a heat pump system.

You can do both - you can couple the heat pump with the gas furnace - gas furnace would only kick in on days when the heat pump can’t keep up. But they can add electrical resistance heating elements for back up heat if the heat pump goes down at lower cost than the furnace, but then you may not have the electrical service for the heating elements at the current furnace location. So if, I’d go gas furnace whether you go conventional HVAC or heat pump.
I personally would not forgo gas heat for electric - but that’s me. This article on heat pumps came to me this AM - haven’t had a chance to read it yet. LINK

This is what we had when we lived in VA. We set the gas to furnace to come on at 30 degree. You can set to swap over at what ever temperature you want.

I have an HVAC with a heat pump. It works great, but my house is very well insulated. Also, I live in South Louisiana.

I put a dual fuel Bosch HP in last year. I wanted the ability to keep the house cozy and fridge, lights etc running with my 3000 watt Honda generator. It's more costly, but it's nice having options.

I have a dual fuel system. I use the heat pump until the temp gets to around freezing or a little above and then I switch to gas. Heat pumps aren’t efficient at lower temperatures and will run and run to keep the house warm.
