Cub Cadet Mower won’t start?

I have a 2016 Cub Cadet with a 7000 Kohler 22hp motor. After my last use, as I was parking it, the motor sounded like something came loose and was rattling or spinning around. Today, when I tried to use it, it would not turn over. Just a single click noise. Any ideas? Here’s a list of things I’ve done:
-replaced air and fuel filter 2 months ago
-charged battery (1 year old)
-removed starter to inspect if it broke or had rattling inside of it, it did not.

check to see if the starter is lose, sometimes the bolts can be lose and if so the starter jams when trying to start.
take out spark plug so you can turn the engine by hand using the screen on the top so you can see whats moving that shouldnt be and isnt right
problem with kohlers is they are full of plastic gears so when one fails, it falls into the others and everything inside gets grenaded.
when you turn it by hand you can tell if theres broken stuff inside the engine, if it is, its trash and you need a new engine

Could it be one of your kill switches came loose, like the one attached to the seat that will kill the engine if you go flying off?
Maybe a bad solenoid? They are cheap on amazon and easy to replace.

The brake switch and the seat switch are all good. I watched them engage. I have seen the solenoid could be a culprit but the noise it made has me worried.
I’ll pop the screen tonight and try turning the motor.

I know your battery is one year old, but you need to check battery voltage.

Hand turned the motor…didn’t hear anything grinding or any other odd noises. It was hard to turn, not sure if that’s normal or not.

Crosspost on the Outdoors Board. Them baws can fix anything.

ok i think you are in luck then
im pretty sure the push rods or the valve rockers fell off. what happens is the engine cant spin because the valves arent opening. it will be obvious when you remove the cover. oh it leaks a little oil when you do it so put a rag under it.
take the OHV cover off and check the gap for the valves. intake should be .004 and exhaust is .006
the exhaust valve will be the one right next to the exhaust pipe.
ignore what the guy says in the video about getting top dead center. that doesnt matter which stroke it on because all you have to do is turn it until one valve is all the way open or close to it, and that is when the other valve is set correctly to adjust that valve and tighten the lock nut.
watch this video and he shows you how to adjust them. LINK
NOTE - watch out for the tiny caps on the ends of each valve, sometimes they can fall into the cover and you have to put those back in place. you can see it at the 1:00 mark of this video. LINK
he also shows his valve was stuck on his engine because the valves werent sticking out the same amount when its fully extended. which is an easy way to tell if the head is messed up. often the reason these things happen is if it overheats.
one last caution is to look at the stud for the valve adjuster to be sure it hasnt backed out unscrewing from the cylinder head

Does the oil smell like gas? If yes it could by hyrdo locked with gas. Take the spark plug(s) out and try to crank it with the spark plug(s) removed. Watch to see if any gas sprays out of the spark plug hole(s) if engine turns over.

If it has a pull start, try starting fluid, pull, see if it starts.

Thanks Keakar and Wead, I’ll try both of those solutions!

When you removed the starter, did you bypass the solenoid to see if the starter spun on it's own?

This and fixing the gaps was my adventure last year. Wasn't hard to get right. It was harder to clean up and get the gas smell off my hands.

No I saw a video where a guy said he heard similar noises to what I heard and he removed his starter to find it was broken. Mine spun easily without noise when I had it removed.

Keakar,
I have the covers off, do I take the measurement when the valve is all the way open or closed or does it matter? I’ve measured the exhaust to .006 and it seemed fine. I cannot get .004 to fit on the intake. That’s at both positions.

turn the engine until one valve is pushed in all the way, that is when you measure the other valve because that one is out all the way and thats what you are measuring is the gap.
there should be just a slight drag on the feeler gauge when its set correctly.

sounds like something is definitely not right there. you need to loosen it and reset it
watch this video and see if it helps you LINK
when you are done it should run like new again
taryl has videos covering just about everything you could ever need to fix on a lawnmower and he has fun making silly video intros at the beginning of each.

My Cub Cadet, Kohler 18 Courage has always been a bitch to start.
I think its the "auto", vacuum style choke. Its a shitty design.
Give me my manual choke cable back.

I'm curious, were the rods out of place, gaps way off?

its because kohlers dont have solid lifters, so you have to crank it to build oil pressure before the valves will open. so kohlers dont need to check the valve adjustments, but yes you have to crank them to get them started.
im not sure how the kohlers auto choke works, but B&S auto chokes use a thermal disk connected to the exhaust to operate them based on engine heat
