A/C service came to clean unit and said we need to get our blower cleaned. Mostly Just dust build up etc.

Quoted me $600 to clean it. Seems outrageous but I know nothing on HVAC repair maintenance.

Anyone been quoted on this lately?

I just had my blower motor changed for around $800. I would check with other companies before dropping that much coin.

I mean looks easy in theory. Some step by step would be better. Not every unit is the same. What are the spraying and lubricating the wheel with etc

I’d do it for 400. If it is easy access.

Coil cleaner is sprayed on the scoops.

I could pay 2/3 of my camp lot lease for cleaning 1 blower.

Is it in the attic? Find someone to do it in the winter for $200

Not in the attic. Can be accessed from a utility closet in the hallway.

I’m still having trouble understanding the $600. Probably 1.5-2 hour
Job. Not replacing parts or anything. You’re telling me it’s $300/hr in labor?

Unless there's something crazy about your system the blower should be easily accessible being in a closet and I would absolutely not pay $600 to have it cleaned. You could probably buy a new one and have it installed for less than that total.

It's not hard to do if you are reasonably handy and have some tools.

How old is your system? Not saying it doesn’t need done but I’ve never heard of this.

It’s more than likely a money grab imo

The condenser outside is a 2010. The interior unit is a bit older. Couldn’t tell you honestly. Probably needs replacement but other than dust build up, per the ac guy, it still runs just as well as it needs do

No fricking way I would pay that much to get that done. I have never heard of getting that done. In fact, I would probably try to find a more honest company to do my AC work in the future.

It’s July and there is a shortage of a/c guys.

Do this in November and it’s much cheaper

Oh it’s a legit need. Especially if you haven’t had the outside coils cleaned in a while.

It’s not some bs type deal. But I might just wait til the winter and have it done then.

I’ve watched HVAC tech videos on YouTube where blowers wheels are so dirty, clogged and unbalanced that they must be removed, taken outside to be properly cleaned and lubricated and then re-installed, even then it doesn’t sound like it should be much more than a couple hour job.

Of course, those are associated with systems where filters are not used by the homeowner, by-passed in some way, or there is a leak in the return plenum/ducts downstream of the air filter. That is the job of the filter - to keep the blower motor, blower wheel and evaporator coil clean.

If you not are having issues with air flow and cooling, I’d wait. In the interim, there are good HVAC channel videos of techs doing this if you want to try to assess it yourself to determine if you really think your blower needs this.
