Typical suburban house in Baton Rouge. Area developed 12-15 years ago, smallish yards, HOA requirements for certain amount of landscaping. What I inherited 5 years ago was garbage, beds and yard. Slowly making the yard better, hasn’t been easy with every grass and weed type found in the area well represented. Well, after the freeze, the landscaping I had been doing in patchwork fashion is nuked, so it is time for a complete do over. First two estimates are both right at $10K. Any suggestions on other services to reach out to, or how to lower costs (besides DIY, which neither time nor energy allow)? Or is this the reality these days.

I am redoing my beds in Lafayette at $5k. New dirt, mulch, rocks and plants. I am keeping it simple with box hedges, 2 japanese Magnolias, short roses, agapanthus and something else.

Correct.

I'd say the going rates are anywhere between $6K and $10K, turn key. Of course, this depends on the types of plants and trees that you pick - and total area being worked on.

Doesn't sound out of line. The type of plants you want plays a good bit into cost. If you want to plant 50 boxwoods to meet HOA requirements and be done with it, that's probably much cheaper than having a mix of plants and flowers to give the place some curb appeal.

where do you live? I may know some people in that area.

10k is about average for a typical residential home from a decent sized landscape contractor. Most won't even show up for less than 5k.

I would suggest possibly hiring a smaller group that's just starting out to take care of it, but you get what you pay for sometimes.

Also depends on the type of materials, sizes etc

You can save a bundle doing it yourself. Especially if you go to Forrest Hill and hit up the wholesale nurseries for your shrub needs.

Keep in mind, depending on what you have in your beds right now, most stuff will come back. 20 degrees kills a lotta shite back, but the roots typically survive (not counting tropicals).

10K is not super high now a days.

I’m a landscape contractor... what’s the scope of work? Removing old shrubs, and adding new? Anything else? Stone edgers?

I’m in South Baton Rouge off Highland. I should have figured when the two came in pretty close on price, that was what I was facing. I’d like to get at least one more estimate. I did get good ideas from both. And both are booked until May so others must like them.

Mostly replacing existing landscaping and adding. Small bit of patio work leveling and putting in pavers around an oddly designed space

I’m always shocked at the total after I go pick out some new plants for the garden.

If you landscaper rolls up in a Jacked up 250 then he’s not the right guy.

Then 10K definitely doesn't sound astronomical... typically on a reno, just for cleaning out front beds, new plants, and fresh mulch, I am between 2-4K... so if you're getting the entire property redone, plus pavers, 10K is reasonable.

Much cheaper if you do it yourself.

Find a budget you're comfortable with and let the contractor know. Most good ones will tell you what they can get you for that cost. Maybe pick out the things that are most important, like the pavers etc. Have them do the bulk of the work and you can come back in and plant extra plants over time.

10k is about right for what you're describing though.
