re: Live oak help

Thanks everyone for all of the suggestions!!! I think we will keep it simple and mulch it (for easy of upkeep). I’ll ask the tree guy that’s coming add cabling to it about the dirt situation

Hold up.. we had cast iron plants there! I didn’t know that’s what they were called until I just googled that. That was the big plant we just removed. We were told by an arborist that it was starting to affect the health of the tree
The plan at this point is to also remove the monkey grass as you can see it’s in terrible shape too… unless someone suggests otherwise. It could be cleaned up and more can be planted to fill in the gaps if needed
Live oak help
Posted by Cleopatra on 8/23/25 at 8:49 pm
We just removed a ton of over grown / weed infested Asian jasmine, ferns, and lily of the valley around this oak due to how difficult it is to upkeep/maintain… (We have very young children, full time jobs, and a ton more landscaping around the sides of the house and backyard.) We are seeing conflicting information online about what to do with the area around it. What is the best type of mulch to add or any other recommendations to make this look good, but also easy to maintain? Side note- hoping to add a children’s swing on one of the branches for the kiddos
Speaking of amaryllis plants, I have a bulb from Amsterdam currently indoors in a planter; it is about to bloom. I do not have the greenest thumb and would like for it to multiply. Any tips for transplanting from pot to flowerbed & how to multiply the bulbs?
re: Hearing aids

Not all costcos have audiologists testing & fitting the hearing aids.. some only have techs on staff- just an fyi!
Overall great advice in this thread! Find an audiologist and get properly fitted. Ideally, find you an audiologist that follows best practices (hint- ask if they use real ear measurements when programming prior to even scheduling an appt). Dr. Cliff Olsen’s YouTube page is a great start for educating yourself before buying that way you don’t end up with buyers remorse if you’re not satisfied. Follow up 2x/year minimum to ensure your devices are cleaned checked and working optimally. Get your hearing tested annually to monitor any changes and get aids reprogrammed if it does. Stay away from proprietary brands because they cannot be serviced by anyone else aside from that brand (Audibel, miracle ear, etc..)
Phonak is one of the “big 6 “ manufacturers out of the hundreds of HA manufacturers and produce terrific products with excellent service. Their programming software also allows the audiologist to make tons of adjustments to fit your needs. Oticon, Resound, & Signia are also good brands to consider too.
Style- behind the ear vs in the ear is really a recommendation the audiologist will make based off your results. Most people- regardless of severity of the loss and configuration of the audiogram- are good candidates for behind the ear (commonly called “receiver in the canal” or “RIC” for short) but in the ear is not a good option for most hearing aid candidates due to the occlusion effect.

Look up the “no surprises act” that went into effect a couple of years ago & mention that to them. I’m sure they will make some adjustments after that :)
The dizzier you get with the cool or warm air test, the stronger your vestibular response is (meaning, it’s a good thing to get dizzy on that test; if you’re not dizzy & it’s a significant difference from the other ear, it suggests that ear is the ear with the weakness not the ear you got dizzy with).
Have you discussed possibility of vestibular migraine with your neurologist? I’d also be interested to hear your vng results; a unilateral vestibular weakness is possible with your aural symptoms… but everything else you mentioned suggests possibility of VM. I hope you’re seeing a good audiologist for the VNG.
It’s HODA and she’s retiring from NBC Today Show lol

FYI, just because you don’t get service connection for hearing loss doesn’t mean you don’t have hearing loss. It just means they don’t connect your current hearing levels to time spent in service (it’s based on your entrance and exit audiograms and health questionnaires in service).
If you have tinnitus and feel like you have difficulty hearing, please schedule a treatment exam with an audiologist. Even though there’s not a magic pill to cure tinnitus, can get tinnitus relief by treating your hearing loss.

re: Cost to install vented gas log fireplace?
Posted by Cleopatra on 10/1/23 at 8:14 pm to Yaboylsu63
5 years ago it was about $750 including installation & materials. We had a wood burning fireplace with gas already there. No regrets& we love it! (Lafayette)
Robert et Louise was fantastic! We ate at several restaurants on our trip to Paris a few years ago and I’ll never forget the duck confit and green beans.
We bought a dolphin premier pool robot last year and it has helped tremendously! Sadly I know we will have to cut down the crepe myrtles. I hate to do it because they are so mature and beautiful, but you’re right
Backyard landscaping
Posted by Cleopatra on 8/5/23 at 10:42 am
Unfortunately we bought a house with a beautifully landscaped backyard and pool, but it is an absolute nightmare to keep the pool clear and clean with all the debris that is consistently falling into it year round. For the big items, we have a pecan tree, two white oaks, one live oak, 8 crepe myrtles, two olive trees, and lots of banana trees. It is always something depending on the time of the year; we have about 3-4 weeks out of the entire year nothing is falling & I’m done. We have been in this house 6 years and have a toddler; it’s just too difficult to maintain & a giant pain in the butt. This is a relatively small yard of maybe .10 of an acre, so everything ends up in the pool and it’s constantly causing PH issues. There’s nothing we can do about the oaks or pecan tree & the banana trees are no issue. I’m thinking if we get rid of the very mature beautiful crepe myrtles that surround the pool, it’ll be a relief. What should we plant in its place that would be beautiful and not shed its leaves or flowers? We live in Lafayette LA for reference & I’m a pretty poor landscaper (we are way in our heads with the landscaping, so something easy to maintain). We are considering citrus trees, but I’m open to opinions and suggestions! Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post
re: OT Medical Docs

Vertigo is a symptom, not a diagnosis. If it persisted beyond 60 seconds, it is not likely BPPV (loose “crystals” in the inner ear). If you did not have unilateral change in hearing or onset of low pitch humming tinnitus accompanying your dizziness, it’s not likely Menieres’s. I’d say schedule an appt with a vestibular audiologist or a good ENT (preferably an otologist) as a starting point. You shouldn’t do the Epley maneuver unless you have been instructed by a professional and you are certain the crystals are in the posterior canal. If it is BPPV and you complete the Epley yourself but don’t do it just right, you risk multicanal involvement which makes treatment a lot trickier and more involved.
*Also fyi, if the cause of your dizziness was vestibular neuritis, it’s likely BPPV can follow in the next few days or weeks.
