Concrete vs asphalt driveway

Currently have a gravel driveway but would like to upgrade. My last 2 homes had concrete driveways and dealt with cracks over a period of time. I've never had anything asphalt. Anyone have any experience with it? Pros-cons?
Driveway is 300ft long with a 40x60 area between carport and shop that I would like poured as well. I'm coming up with $25500 for concrete using the guy that has done some work for me. $4.25sq ft. I have no idea the cost difference compared to asphalt

I had a driveway that long in Virginia. There's not many asphalt driveways here in S La, but they are the norm in Northern Virginia. Weather probably drives that difference. I liked the look of asphalt especially with a long driveway. We never had any issues with it. Some folks sealed it to preserve the dark black look but it wasn't necessary.

Asphalt will be less expensive regrade the drive and compact the ground add gravel pave

With asphalt you have to make sure you have a great base and drainage. Concrete not so much. You will need to reseal asphalt about every 5 years or so to protect your investment. I don't think you'll find that much difference in a proper asphalt installation cost versus concrete.
I have an asphalt driveway. Up north where I live, it is way easier for snow & ice renewal than concrete is.

Yeah we had a asphalt drive way as well. Definitely the norm up there.
They can still be suspectable to cracking. We never sealed ours while I was there, but it was starting to show cracking at various parts. The driveway was probably around 10years old at that point.

I too grew up in NOVA and had asphalt. 300 ft would be very very expensive for concrete.

Tip if you own a motorcycle. Make sure you have something to put under the kickstand between the asphalt and the actual stand that is flat or the kickstand will sink into the asphalt on really hot days like we have in the summer.
I almost had my motorcycle tip over parked on a blacktop street when the kickstand started sinking into the surface.

Give Epic Paving a call; they give free estimates.
This will at least give you an idea on cost.
Being it's currently gravel it sounds like you already have a good surface to start with. My grandfather has a paved driveway to his shop behind his house. Didn't do any base material and went cheap, it's been fine now for about 6-7 years. 1 or 2 dips, but I'd assume this is because he didn't have them lay any base material before the asphalt so it sank some in those spots.

asphalt pricing is tied to the price of oil.
ie: its cheap(er) right now

When you say drainage, are you referring to keeping water away from sides of drive or being laid correctly to avoid water puddles to form?

Asphalt driveways aren't going to be as durable in Louisiana

Both, the base & the asphalt according to the asphalt contractor I got a bid from. Resealing it every 2-3 years is advised.
I have a buddy that owned a small asphalt sealing company for about 30 years.
The drop in oil prices has not filtered down to him due to other chemicals that have increased. I'm sure you can get an asphalt job for a lot less than concrete. If you want it to last, it's probably going to closer to a concrete price.

Got an asphalt driveway that’s about 1/4 mile long. I like it. Gets hotter than hell in the summer though

Anyone have a tar and chip? Local ads pop up on my Facebook feed and had me interested.

tar and chip
ETA: my bad that's track material, there's a difference between blacktop and asphalt.
I got a quote for each and blacktop was between 25-35% the cost for asphalt.
