Some strains of Common/wild Bermuda that I’ve seen are ugly. Very hardy stoles above the ground, weaving into each other. Not even 100% it’s Bermuda though, but pretty sure it is.
When claiming new ground this is what it looks like in my experience, until it fills in.
For example, this is my 'wild' bermuda after about 9 months of properly maintaining it. This was before I leveled so I'll probably keep it cut just a notch lower now.

This is an area on the fringe of the lawn after leveling.

On the bird thing if you have an old mattress and can burn it or get it down to box spring, pulling that around on 4 wheeler or behind mower on seeded works great to mark Dom remaining clumps and buy seed lightly. Just one pass.

That is absolutely stunning. I hope to be there in a year or three. I think leveling might be a multi year adventure with my clay soil. Supper jealous of the sand folks.

Appreciate it man.
I added 3 yards of silt last September and 4 yards in early June. Plus many bags here and there.
I love seeing the improvement.

You battle weeds after putting that silt down

The area underneath my oak tree is pretty well compacted and I’ve been wondering what might work to get some Bermuda growing there
Thin out or cut down the tree. It’s the only way.
I think we've decided we're gonna extend a mulch area around it.
Rest of the lawn is coming along well.
What do I do now? I've got about 60-40 grass to weeds (from 25-75 grass to weeds+dirt).
Can I hit the lawn now with something to knock down the weeds again?

This is what I have done and would recommend: buy a packet of both Celsius and Sedgehammer.
Mix them at the lowest rate depending on lawn size and broadcast spray 4 weeks apart.
For the area that I’m spraying I can use half a packet at the time. Or, if you’ve got the stomach for it, buy full bottles of both. Probably a few hundred dollars, but cheaper long term.
You’re unlikely to eliminate the weeds this year, but you can get really close next year with a fall and spring pre emergent. Look up threads for those or wait until September. They’ll be popping up.

I have a few live oaks on my property. St. Augustine was the dominant grass before I started pushing common Bermuda. Sprayed MSMA up to where the shaded area is and have full Bermuda everywhere except under the trees. Haven’t started PGR yet but will next year after I sand level. I spray Celsius during the growing season and Specticle Flo and prodiamine for pre emergent.

Red line shows where there was a small amount of common bermuda last year. I'd seeded a bare patch in summer of 2022. It didn't really show up until last year. White line shows how far it has spread in to St Aug.
Half of my front yard was St Aug and another half centipede when I bought the house. I put a few celebration bermuda plugs where some centipede was killed in the late frost last year. The whole dark green area in the circle is celebration.
You can see in the bottom of this pic that there is still some St Aug mixed in to the common bermuda. I'm guessing if I hit it with celsius it'd go away. I spot sprayed VBW with it earlier this year and it stunted the hell out of the St Aug. Every one of the spots I treated now has bermuda popping up.
I hope I have a 100% bermuda front lawn in 2 or 3 years. I'm taking the slow route but I'm cheap.

How long did it take for the Bermuda to grow in? Do you mow a lot?
I started nearly a year ago.

Yes you are

Given the patch of Bermuda you started with, everyone in Baton Rouge should give it a try.
I’m doing the same thing in the back yard, but have St Aug in the front.

My yard still looks like sh*t but I'm pretty tickled with how much better it looks than when I started. Especially the backyard. It was almost all dirt summer of 2021.

That’s where I am in year 1. Had a bunch of trees removed and it was dirt and shite weeds with a little grass.
Now I’ve got Bermuda coming in well. Can’t wait to see how it is in year 2 and 3.

What height is Bermuda cut at? My yard is not golf course level and if Bemuda looks ragged at a taller height, not sure that is the route for me.

10 September 2023 (half of what's green is carpet, goose, and crabgrass):

16 July 2024 and it's 100% bermuda. Hoping it all fills in my this September.

These are probably better comparisons. This is last August before I spread 3 yards of river silt (don't use river silt):

And this was today before I mowed:

Again, the bermuda is shitty quality and look at all those weeds:

Still needs to thicken up after recent sand leveling:

What height is Bermuda cut at?
With a reel mower, 0.25 to 1"
I would submit that bermuda can look good up to 2.5" if maintained at 2.5 often. Meaning, cut every 3-4 days at 2.5
If you yard isn't level you can still probably pull off 1.5 to 2"

far from it...
I don't think I'll be happy with it until I level/topdress it

Might have that done in the spring.

I cut mine at 1.75" using exmark mower and I've been mowing on like Wednesdays/Sundays depending on the rainfall.
My yard is far from level. have not brought in sand or fill to this point.
Its more frequent than ive ever mowed, but im all in on trying to get the bermuda established.
and its working so far
