Got 237 ft. that I’m fencing in. I quoted other guys and cedar fencing runs $20 per ft. for 6 ft. fence height. I gave Lowe’s a call because I had used them for window installation and they are $400 cheaper than everyone else. Fence would be cedar with treated pine posts. Anyone had experiences or know of someone who has used Lowe’s? Quality of the cedar pickets? Any suggestions/comments help.

Buy 20% more than you need and return the bad ones.

I would really consider using metal posts. The fence will last a lot longer.

I want to, but the wife (no pics) doesn’t like the look of them.

Face them "out" where you can...if not wrap them in cedar 1x4's to create the look of a post.

I just redid my fence. I got half the pickets from Lowe’s and the other half from Home Depot. Home Depot’s were about 1/8” wider and higher quality.

I'm not trying to hijack, but I've gotten 2 quotes to do 155' of fence in my back yard.. Both contractors want over 3k to do it.

I figured up all materials from Home Depot and even figured in 15% extras and it will cost 1k. I realize its labor intensive, but jesus christ..

I got a quote for $5000 from a local guy, $4800 from another, and $4350 from Lowe’s. Haven’t called Home Depot yet, but will in a few.

Thank you for that. I didn’t know if they were roughly the same or one was a little better.

If you are buying enough material, start a pro account and Home Depot will price match a lot of the material.

I used 6x6 posts so I could shadow box both sides. It's been 5 years and I have yet to finish the inside.

Here are some pics of the fence I build in my backyard a few years ago. I used schedule 80 pipe and surrounded them in a box made of pickets with a cap on top of everything. The quality of the pickets that you will get would probably be better from a lumber yard than from a big box store. You can also see the difference between stained and unstained.

Lowe’s uses the WORST contractors for their jobs. I would pay much more to have Lowe’s NOT do any work. I had terrible experience with them for appliance delivery, removal and installation and would never use them for anything again. I also had a friend use Lowe’s for her fence and it’s falling down after 6 month

If you can figure out how to post those pics I’d love to see them. I need a new fence and my metal posts are in great shape. I would prefer the look of cedar posts though.

I built a shadow box privacy fence last year when I bought my house. Two quotes from fence companies both over 6k.

I built it with a few friends. My material cost was $2600.....I’m sure the fence companies get a much better rate.
I guess the point is there is a shite load of markup. Price out the materials to make sure it is fair.

The guy who gave me the quote had everything combined together (labor and materials) and then gave me a figure of 17.50 per LF..

Seemed kinda shady to have it broke down like that. I work for a contractor in a different field, so I know how the game is played

First, as someone else mentioned, use galvanized fence posts. They won't rot on you and will last longer.

More importantly, i would try to look elsewhere for fencing material. I put up a 275ft fence and spent almost 7K but i knew from the beginning I wasn't going to box stores. The box stores don't have a good selection of true numbered fence boards (ie #1 best, #2 mid grade, #3 low grade). True fencing companies will have a TRUE #1 board that will last a little longer and won't buckle under expansion and contraction from rain/sun. The box stores also will not be overly selective for you about getting the best boards and at 237 ft, I can almost assure you you'll have alot of bad boards.

I'd recommend Sequioa Outdoor supply in Metairie. That's where I went to get my fence material and while i paid more, I got a good product. The owner helped me through the entire process and lent me a nail gun for free.

4 years later, my fence is doing well with no warped boards.
