Would
You consider buying a Chevy/gmc full size (or mid size) truck with 150k miles?
Looking for son a truck, with about $15k budget…. That’s about the mileage for a 2015 and newer model
TIA

Not for $15K. Jr. would be driving a $7K Toyota Corolla until he could afford to buy his own damn truck.

After my past experience with GM products, I wouldn’t touch them with a 10’ pole. Every single one I’ve owned nickel and dimed on repairs constantly.

If it was meticulously maintained, then maybe. But knowing how most people treat their property, no way.
Chances are high that you’ll be paying 5k on maintenance in the next year or two.
Now it’s a 20k truck with 150k miles. I don’t know how you feel about that, but I’d pass.

I bought an 06 Silverado 6.0 last year with 180k miles for $4200 from an auction. Truck would be fine for a teenager. I spent a couple hundred in repairs that I did myself. Easy to work on and parts are easy to get. Tell him to look up a YouTube video when he hears or feels something off and fix it.

Not a GMC for reasons stated by others, but b/c of Toyota reliability I’d look into a higher mileage, single owner Toyota Tacoma with service records, following an independent service shop inspection. Something like this
FWIW, I own a 2005 Toyota Tundra (original owner), 210 K miles, and have never spent a dime on anything engine-drivetrain related in the time I’ve owned it - accessories, sure, as thing wear out over time - but I do maintain it. As I understand it, Tacoma’s are in pretty high demand by young men.

1000% agree. All day, every day.

I think there's good Chevy trucks out there for sure. Are you looking regular cab, ext cab, crew cab and what motor... etc.
Maybe I was lucky but mine has been pretty good. Had some initial work done to it back in 2010 (2009 model bought brand new) and has rock solid. Just had the brakes done less than 500 miles ago because I felt it was time to give the factory brakes a rest. This beast has about 125k miles and neither of my kids (17 & 19) are allowed to drive it.

It's way past time to change the timing belt on your Tundra

Yes, if it was well maintained. The main issue with them has been transmission problems. Something in that mileage range will likely have already had the transmission problems addressed, but I might be a little more wary if the transmission was completely original.

Oh, I should have clarified. I have that done every 7 years (or 90K miles, which ever comes first), last done in Oct 2024, and water pump, camshaft seals, crankshaft seal, belt tensioners, replaced at the same time while those components exposed during the timing belt change. And that is one of the first one things I would look for in buying a used Toyota with timing belt. And if there is no record of that being done, expect to add $1500 to the cost of the vehicle right out the gate.
But those I consider general maintenance, not major repairs, though it is a $1200 service…..lol (lots of labor time to access those components). Of course proper maintenance of transmission, fluid & filter change, transmission valve body re-torqued at 50K mile intervals (well, now at 3 year intervals as it’s not an every day drive vehicle anymore).
Point being, with proper maintenance Toyota’s tend to last forever and that’s reflected in their high re-sale value - they are in high demand for this reason.

I’m also ignorant on this as I’ve never bought via this method, I just googled high mileage Tacomas at $15K and that popped up. I assume this vehicle might have been a trade in and is likely at a dealership in the Baton Rouge area but here is the link

I saw a mint 1989 Toyota 4x4 for that much, basically a red version of the truck Marty McFly had in BTTF. I would buy that WAY before any GM truck made after 2007.

I think it was AutoTrader for the Memphis area though I don't remember where it was listed. My fiancée's mother's neighbors have a white Tacoma of the same era parked in their backyard, apparently it belonged to a son that went missing several years ago. Sad for them, I understand they are keeping it out of hope but also tough to see that truck just sitting in the yard collecting dirt.

I’ve got a 2006 with 285K on it, so I wouldn’t hesitate.
Just be sure the transmission is in good shape and there are no codes in the computer.
