Bought a garbage disposal with a plug. Can I use this on the romex coming out of the wall?

Is this a major fire hazard or anything? The disposal has the option to pull the cord and cut off the plug and strip the wires and use a cap but this seems like a cleaner, safer and easier solution but I don't know if this is going to be a potential fire hazard because if its this easy, wouldn't the disposal instructions have recommended something like this?

Every disposal I’ve seen installed was plugged into a dedicated, switched receptacle under the sink. Never hard wired.

Why not install a surface mount box and a receptacle instead of wiring the plug?

the lightswitch is connected to the romex coming out of the wall behind the sink under the cabinet.

i'm not sure how to install an electrical box down there and i guess the switch would power both top & bottom outlet?

its just a hole in the wood with a long-arse romex connected directly to the current disposal.

eta off to research what a surface-mount-box is :lol

eta2 - here's a pic of it right now. would love to make this look better. it barely reaches so i would love to fix this correctly when i swap it.

Just something like this:

Your switch is above the countertop, but all the same for this install. Just mount a box over the hole from the romex coming out the wall, install a receptacle and a faceplate and you’re done. The romex should be switched from the switch so the entire outlet will be switched. Obviously, you shouldn’t use this outlet for anything else.

thank you!!! i feel dumb for not thinking of something like that.

while i have you..i have a light on an external siding wall and was thinking of hanging a tv from the eave and using that for the power. could i do something similar? Its vinyl siding so i'm not sure how an outlet box would work.

Exterior is a little more complicated, but in theory yes. If you’re running on the surface, and it’s not deep under a porch, you’ll need to use waterproof boxes, fittings, and conduit. If it’s deep under a cover and at no risk of water, you can use surface mounted conduit and a surface mount box. If you’re planning to route inside the wall, you can use a regular romex and a waterproof face plate.

In any case, you’ll need a GFCI outlet and the receptacle will be switched with the light unless you remove the light and remove and rewire the switch.

They make trim boxes/pieces for vinyl siding that go around receptacles and switches. It would probably clean up the install but you’d have to trim the siding in place.

Have you looked at the instructions that came with the disposal? Most have instructions for both a hardwire install and a plug install.

If it has a plug, generally you just remove the plug wires and add your wires from your wall to hardwire it. This is usually in the instructions.

i did. mentioned it in the OP. it involves cutting the cord for the plug, stripping the lines and wiring them to the romex.

i'd prefer to put in a box and be done with it.
