Hello. I may get killed for asking this, but has anyone had success or seen someone successfully grow Bluebonnets in South Louisiana? Just came back from Texas Hill Country and they really are a pretty flower in the Spring.

I’ve tried several times with seed to get them established. For whatever reason they do fine for one season but never come back

so give it a try. Plant seeds in the fall and see what happens

Just drove through Hill Country and the combination of Bluebonnets and Indian Paintbrush is gorgeous.

Wife from Tx Hill Country tried for bluebonnets in Baton Rouge for a few years. Bedding plants from nursery looked OK but spindly. They never reseeded. Oddly enough, Bluebonnet Blvd is just a few blocks away. There may have been some here in the past.

The prairie soils around Austin have a lot of crumpling rock and dry very quickly. Most Louisiana soil stays wet...possibly the cause.

They actually have a pretty good bit on Grand Isle. I think towards the far end of the island.

Bluebonnets like dry, well-drained, higher pH soils--which is something not generally found in South Louisiana.

yep. you need shitty soil. There's a reason they grow so well in the Texas Hill Country.

It’s why in Texas you don’t see alot of bluebonnets in counties that grow a lot of crops.

We grow them I grand isle. My neighbor had a camp in grand isle and probably started the blue bonnets there along with my dad 35+ years ago. The last few years they took a hit with storms. This year they are looking pretty good. If you see the ones across from Sureway those were where they started.

We usually go to Ennis to see bluebonnets. We saw them along highway coming back from
Toledo Benn two years ago as it’s close to TX.

are y’all collecting seed and re sowing or just letting them seed themselves? Makes sense that they will re seed in grand isle, similar poor soils with lots of calcium as in hill country. The Edwards plateau in Texas used to be a sea bed

Lost a bunch after Ida. Between erosion and running equipment around the yard. I spend a day every year collecting seed at a spot away from my camp. . Also wait until the seeds start popping to cut near me. I have collected two jars the last two years. They are supposed to fix the levee on the whole island and cap it with sand. I plan on seeding up my levee this year if they finally get it done.
