Bird deterrent for columns

Have a family of 5 barn swallows that I nicely let nest on the top of one of my porch columns for a couple of months.
When they left the nest, I removed it, but now every evening they’re back just piled up on the next column (no nest). I was hoping they’d move on without their nest but they keep coming back and shitting everywhere.
I see several different products, mostly the spikes which would be an eye sore imo. Anyone use these or other methods with success?

i dealt with this years ago. I tried the spikes, owls, snakes, reflectors, and bird glue. All to no avail. I lines the top with mouse traps. A few got caught in them. I reset them and haven't had issues since.

instead of spikes maybe try a good bit of skinny finishing nails and sharpen the end with a dremel. I dont think that would be very visible from the ground.

did the same, then a they pecked the Styrofoam out and the stucco collapsed, when I had it fixed i brought the stucco all the way up to the ceiling, looked a bit awkward initially but I don't even notice it now and have had no problems

I've used bird tape in the past. You need it to hang down over the area where they try to build. The lightest breeze moves it. I've never had them build where I use it.

Consider yourself lucky that you don’t have a wife that makes you keep them. We’ve had front porch doves for years now. They don’t make a mess though.
I imagine a few good broom swats should do the trick. There’s also the anti-woodpecker caulk that makes their feet sticky and they really hate that.

I am having the same issue with Wren's. They build nest every where especially my wife's plants. There is a nest with baby birds in the cover for my propane tank now. I had two security sensors over my front and back doors and they tried to build a nest there until I removed the sensors.

Pressure washer and a ladder. Constant battle. Hi speed lead would be nice if it wasn’t a federal crime.

If you can figure out a way to hold up some fishing line it’ll help. When they fly into that they normally stay away after.

At one time I'd have 3-4 doves build nests on top of my front and rear porch columns that have a fairly large flat spot at the top, allowing room for the nests.
I took some small stuffed animals like the ones thrown at Mardi Gras parades and put them atop the columns and that has worked for a few years so far and the birds, if they do return, simply see them and fly off.
I love birds, but building nests in that area made my porches a total mess with twigs dropping as they built the nests and bird crap piling up under the columns. Then when the birds finally leave I get a ladder and clean up the area and bird crap is usually an inch thick and dried hard as mortar.

You can cut a piece of plywood to fit the top. Shoot the crap out of it with 2 and 1/2-in finish nails and then place that at the top. They will not nest or land on it.

I’ve stacked bricks on top of the column. Just need to do wood or something to fill up that space.

I had a similar problem a several years ago. Bought a product called Bird X. I haven't had to mess with a nest since then. You can buy it from Amazon.
