I live in North Carolina currently; new home, looking to build up a bunch of beds around the house.

Based on what I’ve researched, I think I’m going to mainly use lavender and lemon grass. Specifically looking to deter mosquitos; other pests detected are a plus.

Board thoughts?

You're not going to see any noticeable reduction in mosquitos. Lavender and lemon grass oils do repel mosquitoes but that's after it has been extracted and in concentrated form. But lavender is pretty if you can get it to survive. It needs very good drainage

I had a pretty noticeable decrease in mosquitos around my herb garden with lavender, mint, basil, and lemongrass. Don’t ask me which one made the difference.

You got lucky then. Just about every study done on their effectiveness has shown no noticeable effect.

I’m not saying he is a liar, but I sure would be quicker to trust someone other than the guy trying to sell his services to spray my yard if looking for a source on those claims

That was just one link, there are several articles out there. I'm into organics and try a lot of the "natural" solutionsand sadly, not many of them really work. And Ive tried the lavender, lemongrass and sage and I was still swarmed. The best thing I've found to reduce mosquitos is to not water anything. Even then, my neighbor waters enough for 10 men so I can't escape it.

Lol...Mosquito Joe sprayed my yard for over a year maybe two. My daughter talked me into it. This summer I told her that I think that I hear the mosquito guy outside. She then said to me that we stopped the service last year. We noticed zero difference. Fans work well.

If you like organic means of mosquito control you might consider trying these to see how they work. LINK. Many swear by them. I tried them once and they did seem to help, but our subdivision is sprayed by parish (county) government so who knows. I did open one up after a while and it was full of dead mosquitos. I think they contain yeast, sugar, maybe couple other ingredients, and water is added to the tubes. The carbon dioxide produced by the product attracts the mosquitos.

We have planters surrounding the table on our patio. We have lavender, lemongrass, and rosemary in them.

Not only does it smell great out there, but the flies really don't like it. I haven't noticed a mosquito reduction because we spray the yard and really manage water on the property, but the flies really bothered us when we ate out there.

Those plants surrounding the table + Big Fly Bags distantly placed on the corners of the property (they smell) have all but eliminated the flies.

My wife makes be bathe at least once a month.

But I'm going to try those cylinders next. As I understand it, you have to hang them just before mosquito season starts to see the most benefit.

I believe the cash crop in your state keeps an array of pests at bay The good folks at Bayer (slight sarcasm) developed an entire branch of insecticides, neonicotinoids, from said plant.
