Does anyone have experience with avocado tress in the Baton Rouge area?
I have a 2 year old tree that appears healthy, but now I’m hearing I might need more than one type to get it to produce fruit.

This. In South Florida, I only had one but there were others near mine.

Bought a tree at Cleggs- so I assume grafted, but I don’t see the graft. Also, it survived the wicked cold in Feb 2021.

Avocado is a tropical. You are going to have a tough time getting significant fruit in BR. It's similar to trying to grow lime or guava. You will need to mitigate cold in the winter as much as possible.

They also have very unusual pollination/reproduction. You will need other trees in the neighborhood if you hope to get significant fruit set.

The lady that became my wife lived in Arabi and had a neighbor who had 3 large avocado trees on his property, two of them along the fence that separated their property.

They produced tons of beautiful avocados every year until Katrina took them out.

It really was a shame the old guy lost those trees since he was so proud of how well they produced.

I have an avocado tree I grew from a seed. Spent the first 2years in a pot, then transplanted to the ground. Eight years later, it loses it's leaves every winter, comes back strong in the spring.... never made a single blossom or fruit.

Probably 20+ feet tall. Nothing.

Happy it's alive and well but after some research (long after I planted it) I learned that it takes them a minimum of 7 years to even begin to produce fruit.

I always heard you needed two but it seems that is not the case. But it is true that certain mechanisms of how the trees bloom seem to make it more likely to occur if you have multiple trees. Also 7-10 years until you get fruit from what I gather.

https://www.agric.wa.gov.au/spring/growing-avocados-flowering-pollination-and-fruit-set#:~:text=In%20general%2C%20on%20a%20single,%E2%80%94%20known%20as%20self%2Dpollination.

Here is an interesting article, apparently avocado trees are just difficult even with other trees.

And a youtube video loaded with info about why most avocados don't self pollinate and how to help self pollination.

Another video with good scientific info. You sent me down a rabbit hole

Avocados aren’t “true to seed” meaning an avocado grown from a seed is likely to either not produce avocados or they will be terrible tasting/texture. To grow avocados you should generally buy a grafted tree from a known good producing tree.
