I'm planning on completely redoing my front flowerbed and I'm estimating around $1000 for the plants and mulch. Is there anyway to get a small discount at say PlantTech since I'm buying in such volume? Or is the only way to have a license? TIA for all input

Saturday we were buying some small trees at our local nursery and they mentioned a 10% discount for state horticulture society members. We joined online while shopping and immediately saved the membership fee. It will payoff when we buy another tree in the spring.

That's worth looking into, at least.

Tell them you're shopping around and looking for a deal. List pricing can vary quite a bit from vendor to vendor as well so do some checking.

Definitely worth the trip . I'm just glad I have a Tacoma , my wife always buys twice the plant budget when we go . Fills up the bed and the extended cab.

Do you have a truck? You’ll pay about 1/3 the cost of plant material at retail nurseries if you make a trip to Forest Hills and purchase from a wholesale nursery that sells to the to the public. Doug Young Nursery, Bobby Young Nursery, and Hollaway Nursery are 3 I’ve purchased from. Their plant list and pricing is listed on their websites. Most wholesale nurseries in Forest Hills do not sell to the public.

Some retail nurseries in BR provide a 10% discount if you are a Master Gardner, and I’ll assume your not, but if you know someone who is a MG perhaps they’ll lend you their card. I can tell you Plant Tech does not provide the MG discount, but their pricing is a bit less than the other large retail plant nurseries in BR.

Do these 3 sell to the public?

I know Doug Young does. I bought from them last year. Would highly recommend. They are incredibly reasonably priced.

Yes they do, I’ve purchased from all 3. Doug Young Nursery and Bobby Young Nursery sell at the wholesale price + 10% which is tax b/c it’s a retail sale. Hollaway Nursery is a tad higher in price but not much. All 3 are within a couple miles of each other. Poole Nursery closer to I-49 sells to the public and their prices are a bit higher still, maybe because of their convenient location, but still much cheaper than full retail price.

Yeah I have a truck and a trailer. The only thing I’m worried about is driving back with all those plants because can’t they get windburn driving on the interstate?

Yes wind will damage (burn the leaves) them, so buy a cheap blue tarp(s) of the proper size from Harbor Freight and cover the trailer and bed of your truck and you’re good to go. I rented a 5 x 14 open trailer and I bought a tarp from Harbor Freight that easily covered the trailer - I’m pretty sure I paid no more than $30-40 for the tarp and rope. The guy at Bobby Young Nursery even properly tied down the tarp for me on the trailer - I tipped him well. I used tarp, rope and cinder blocks to cover plants in the bed of my truck.

I returned to BR with all the plants in great shape.

BTW, I purchase all my “garden soil/planting bed material” from Plant Tech, plus some shrubs, etc. plus I frequent Cleggs, LA Nursery in town. But I did go to Forest Hills when I did some major landscaping at the house. I bought about $1,500 of plant material over a couple years in Forest Hills which would have cost me $4,500 locally. I do deer and turkey hunt near Forest Hills so I’m in that area frequently from Oct - April.

Cheap blue tarp is just as bad as blowing the leaves off. You will flap them off. Needs to be woven, or go buy shade cloth from Home Depot or Tractor Supply. The air needs to be able to pass through.

As mentioned before, hit up Forest Hill for savings, or Folsom/Amite if closer. But, don't roll in there thinking $1000 in plants is a lot of money, and you will get extra discount. That is a peasant order in comparison to what they are used to seeing.

Not when tied down properly, i’ve done this with 3 plant hauls from Forest Hills to BR with no issue. No problem with shade cloth, but if tends to be more expensive, one might consider renting a small enclosed trailer and not worry about tarps at all, particularly if making a single trip.

You don’t want me picking out your plants. Anyway I’ve got a full load of gear during hunting season. Why don’t drive up one day on a scouting mission to check out these nurseries and their plant material, decide what you want and go back at a later date for pick up. Doug Young Nursery, Bobby Young Nursery are open 7 days a week. I think Hollaway Nursery is closed on Sundays. Poole Nursery I think is open on Sunday. Bobby Young Nursery has larger trees (15 and 30 gallon) and larger shrubs (7 to 10 gallon) but not 1 or 3 or 5 gallon sizes.

Nov-Feb is a great time to landscape, good for the plants and your body, so you have plenty time.

I also want to clarify when I said I covered the plants with cheap blue tarp, I bought a large enough tarp that could wrap the plants like a burrito or cocoon. Lay the tarp on bed of truck or trailer, place the plants on top of tarp, either on their side or up right, depending on their size, cover them with the remaining tarp like a cocoon, and tie it all down with poly rope. Also used some cinder blocks from HD or Lowe’s (they’re cheap and always find others uses for them at the house) to help weight down the edges, All that keeps the tarp from flapping and beating up the plants.

Lastly, if you plan on using lots of Azaleas in your landscape renovation, I found that Plant Tech, sold azaleas at a very good price, 1/3 more than the wholesale nurseries, but a 1/3 less than other retail plant nurseries in town. I did buy a fair number of azaleas from Plant Tech because at the time they had better looking plants than I was seeing at the wholesale nurseries i could buy from. Plant Tech will also special order for you if needed - say you want 20 azaleas and the only have 10 at the store that you like - they’ll order you 20 - they get deliveries from their wholesale suppliers weekly.
