I'm thinking about upgrading from my 2 burner Weber Grill this winter to get a side burner to fry food and get one that has the ability to add a griddle top. Any success or failure stories with these? I have a griddle for my stove top and it works great for pancakes and that type of thing. But its not large and we try not to use it for things like bacon and meat so as to not cook that inside as much as possible. I have a Green Egg also and I just really don't want a 3rd "grill" just because of space.

I replaced my weber grill grates with a weber griddle insert. I like it so far.

What size and model Weber? Are you able to go back to the grill grates?

Genesis II S340. Yeah, you just have to store your griddle or grill grates. I have the Grill Grates (aftermarket) sitting in a stack right now. Debating selling them on FB b/c I think I prefer cooking on the flat top anyway.

I changed my Weber grates to the griddle insert and I haven't went back to grates since I bought. I might as well throw them away

A "Made in" brand griddle may be smaller than you want. LINK

My son uses one extensively on his stove top and really likes it. He gave me one, and I use it increasingly. It is carbon steel so seasoning and watching out for rust is a minor bother.

It's well made, but how complicated can it be to make a steel plate with handles?

I've been looking at something for home. Does anyone just use cast iron griddles on top of the grates? I have a flat top at work so I know how to maintain them but I felt like that would offer more flexibility with something I already have

Yes I bought a Wagner griddle for this purpose. Its made is America by the same family that used to make magnalite. Way overpriced, but I felt like supporting them hoping they will offer more pieces in the future. Its a very nice piece but you can probably find one 2x the size for 1/2 the price that is not made here in the states. The concept you're asking about works very well for breakfast or if I want to burn steaks without smoking out the kitchen.

Lodge makes a variety of sizes. Before I ditched a grill for the Blackstone, I would just put one of these on.

I like the idea of flexibility like that. I have everything at work to properly clean it so it isnt like that is an issue

I wish I could just buy a sheet and cut it myself to fit. The problem with many of these inserts is they are really small compared to the actual grill space. I have a family of 4 so if I’m going to use it for anything besides burgers they are really not very big.

I have a Weber Searwood XL 600 pellet grill that has a heavy duty Weber carbon steel griddle that I purchased to specifically fit my Searwood XL after I bought the grill. I pull out a portion of my grates and the griddle fits in perfectly with a small grate left in there to put buns or other meats on. There is no burner though for frying. I don’t think I’d want that though the way my covered patio is configured because grease would splatter on my bricks. If I wanted something to fry with, me personally I’d buy myself one of those big standup box fryers made in Homer, LA.

Those GrillGrates (brand name) posted by Neauxla replaced the original grates on my Weber Genesis, and I love them.

They have the ridge side (in his pic) and a flat side, which is where mine stay 95% of the time. You can put them on top of your original grates temporarily, or totally replace the originals (which is what I did).

They are not equal to a griddle for bacon, pancakes, etc. because they have drain holes, but they put a sear/crust (not just grill marks) on a steak or burger like nothing else. I've read that many of the steak competition folks use them for that reason. You can also use the ridged side to put pic perfect grill marks if that is your preference. One of my better purchases.

Random pic of some guy's first cook on the flat side.
