I’m looking for options and ideas on how to add a vent to a house I’m under contract for and in the inspection process.

Man that’s the problem. Not sure if I can do it sure on options.
It’s in the island and it’s a drop in stove top. I’ve seen the pop up ones and I’ve seen some that hang by wires.

Get rid of the light and vent to the ceiling.

I’ve got a bonus room above that so not sure how hard it would be to do that. I guess I could go non vented.
Something like this.
Or I could add a pop up like this. It may require cutting that counter top to fit a bigger cook top with the vent or maybe there’s and option to add the pop up vent to the current cook top but I would need to still cut the counter.

That sucks. Not sure what you can do besides pop up but that’s a terrible option also. Bought a house years ago that had a broken vent and it sucked arse trying to cook without it. Probably a dealbreaker for me if it can’t be added.

I filled in an old skylight above my cooktop and added a vent hood. It came with a paper template to cut the holes and line up.
If you have a room above it may be harder to vent. Mine went straight to the gable to vent out.

Is it a renovation? Maybe there was one somewhere.

They did but I think there was one but they did redo the kitchen recently.

I thought code required you to have one. May be some leverage for the deal.
For those island stoves you pretty much need an industrial sized blower to actually pull enough air for the vent to work.

I think mine is rated around 500cfm but some of the cheaper ones had much lower ratings. I don’t think they would have done enough to actually vent.

So if you have an old pic you can find where the old vent is buried. Don’t know if that will help.

Don’t know the code in your area but there’s normally a requirement to have a vent of some sort. The fact that you don’t have one says the renovation might have been illegal/unpermitted.

We have an island cooktop in a two story home as well. Ours is piped between the floors to the exterior wall.

May not be a huge project if you know which way the joists are running. You should be able to run the vent duct to the exterior wall in the space between ceiling and second floor.
We just did this and put the vent flap on the exterior wall and the venting ran alongside the joists.

That may be what I’ll try and do.
Not sure but there’s a shite load of houses in this neighborhood like this. Most have a pop up vent behind the the cook top but this one doesn’t.

I meant to say I don’t think there was a vent but they did remodel the kitchen. Think the coop top was always in the island.
