I’ve struggled more this year with pH and algae. Doing some reading borates may help me. Does anyone use these in your pool and do you have a source in BR area?

I’ve done it in the past. You can get a box a grocery store or Wal mart. Read Trouble Free Pool website for their recommendations on pool chemicals with bleach, baking soda, and borax.

I got tired of buying bleach every week and switched to SWG a few years ago.

What's the daily electricity demand of an SWG to make chlorine, versus the traditional method? I can get 68% cal hypo for $3 per lb (100 lbs at a time), running a saltwater chlorine generator all the time for 30,000 gallons would seem to cost more, plus the nominal cost however often you need to add salt.

I only use muriatic acid weekly for pH management (reducing), it's rare to need baking soda to reduce alkalinity if you keep up with the right FC and pH numbers. (I'm a TFP believer too.)

Is your pH high or low? Free Chlorine is most important to kill algae first.

High PH will make your FC less effective iirc. And my PH is always high.

I’m not sure. I didn’t make the switch for economic reasons. Although I don’t recall my electricity bill going up significantly when I made the switch. It was more a decision based on convenience and ease of use. I also felt like adding bleach to my pool everyday significantly reduced the life of my liner. This is just a feeling without any data or logic to back this claim.

Yes, I know. pH seems to be more troublesome this year, drifting higher and faster than in the last. Weird thing is I’ve had some spots of black or dark green algae this year for the first time, even with good FC. Dealing with some potentially lost capacity on the pump, too, but trying to stack the deck in my favor and add boron to the mix.

Operating the SWG a few hours a day is very inexpensive, less than $5/month. Replacing the SWG is where the cost is.

I have the opposite problem here in TN. I've added several huge bags of baking soda to my pool this summer. I struggle to keep the pH up.

Eta particularly after heavy rains the ph bottoms out and I have to add a bag or 2 get it back into the correct range.

Yes, our pH drifts down over time, I use borax powder, couple boxes at a time, to raise it back up. Works great and is cheap.
