My units are 18 years old, use the old refrigerant and one compressor is going out. Getting quotes for two new 5 ton units. I know everything is high right now but 28k and 27k so far for 15 seer. All the way to 58k for some fancier stuff. Is this about right in this crazy time?

Get some more quotes but now with a new regulation you have to have a minimum of 15 SEER in the southern states. That started January 1, 2023. The 14 SEER units don't meet the new minimums for the south.

New regs added 20%+ after Jan 1st (thanks Brandon)...
4 ton 14 SEER Trane/electric heat was $11k in December. That was lowest by a few thousand.

Buddy's aka Southern Air did a 5 Ton Trane Unit for me, ran a new air intake to give me two and replaced Gas Heater for like 13k or so in May/Early June of last year.

Same company did mine last week, 4 ton Trane, for the same price $13.5K, last week, which included adding an additional return air vent on the other side of the house. I obtained 5 quotes from reputable, recommended companies, all 5 within $1K of each other. Same quote 4 years ago for the equivalent system I had installed last week was $10.5K.
