AC keeps cutting out. ETA Seems to work fine at night when outside temp drops

I don’t know why. Auxiliary drain pan is empty but it will cut off before hitting set point. Set point is 70 and will shutoff at 73. I know we had some electrical surge issues in the neighborhood but I would think any issue from that would mean the unit wouldn’t work at all.

ETA: it gets even weirder because when it cools off outside at night it will then work fine and get the house all the way down to 69

Have you checked the float switch itself?

I suspect the thermostat.

I’d say it sounds like thermostat. Especially if it’s cutting off @ 73° each time.

It wouldn’t come on at all if the float switch was triggered.

If you set it to 67 will it shut off at 70?

No I’m starting to think it’s a low pressure sensor in the refrigerant system that is causing it to cutoff

my son's ac was short cycling and it was a partial clogged drain line. Once enough water drained it would come back on, but quickly filled up and activated float and cut back off.

Depends on how the float switch is wired. With mine, all it does is cut off the compressor output. As soon as the float switch is proven again, the compressor kicks back on (auto-reset). The fan continues to run all the time if there is a Y1 call.

That’s exactly what I meant. The system wouldnt cool at all if the float switch was triggered. That’s NOT the symptom that the OP is experiencing , thus it’s not his issue.

I’d bet high head pressure cut out/ over heating condenser. Are the condenser and evaporator coils clean / replaced filter. Is the condenser fan running the whole time the compressor is on? A flaky cap can allow it to start the fan but drop out or make fan motor run hot and trip the overheat on the fan motor, leading to the compressor cutting out with high head pressure or overheat.
