A/C very loud suddenly

My MIL's air conditioner recently developed a very loud rattle/hum. It's *not* a hissing sound. The unit is in a closet on the main floor rather than in the attic, so it's quite noticeable. The blower seems to be mechanically alright, because the noise stops completely as soon as I cut the power even though the blower is still spinning quite fast.
Like a dummy I didn't check if the noise persists with just the fan on and not the AC, so I'll have to check that tomorrow. I will also have to bring tools to access the evaporator section, because I could not pinpoint where the noise was coming from in the blower section. Nothing in there seems to be rattling.
Does it sound like a bad expansion valve? It's not icing over and AFAIK the house is still cooling down reasonably well, but of course it hasn't been very hot. I'm sure I'll end up calling the AC guy tomorrow, but figured I would ask here in case I can perform some percussive maintenance on something and get a little more life out of it.

I’ve had the blower come loose on a rental property before. So there was a loud rattle and then the fricker busted off. There’s like 4 bolts that hold it down and a couple came loose and then sheered off the rest.
Long story short, check it out or get a professional to look at it

Capacitor starting to go bad.

As you stated, that’s your first step tomorrow to see if you can isolate the noise being associated with blower assembly - motor, bearings, loose mounting bolts - and not the refrigeration components - expansion valve.

quote:The blower cap? I changed that less than a year ago. Can you explain the mechanism for how a bad cap would create a loud rattle-ish sound?

Mine got loud. It was almost like a tick tick tick, very loud outside my bedroom window. It was the capacitor

It was difficult for me to pinpoint the source of the noise with the blower exposed and 6" from my head. The blower housing wasn't vibrating like I would expect given the volume of the noise. Hopefully I can figure it out tomorrow once I take the side off the evaporator section (after running just the fan of course).
Not sure what good it will do anyway, given that all I would be able to do is give the AC guy a heads up when I call him out.

Last time my A/C got really loud, it was the blower motor dying. Lasted 2-3 days and then had to replace.

what you need to do is hold the center hub and shaft of fan and check if thats loose from the wheel or the shaft.
those welds can break and also the welds on the actual fins of the wheel so all that needs checking
call a pro, let him pull the fan out and see whats loose or broken before it lets go and tears shite up inside there and/or jams and burns out the motor
