Is this an issue? My lawn is pretty sparse right now and i have a bunch of sand being dumped on old grass to level it off. Any issue just laying the new sod on top of that sand layer it should i at least till up the existing grass? New sod is zoysia not sure what is existing but i’d guess some centipede

You're gonna want to get rid of that first. Whether you spray it with glyphosate and then till or rent a sod cutter and cut it out. If you lay it on top of that then that is what your new grass will root into. You'll have issues for a while.

How big is the lawn? You can rent a decent sized tiller from Home Depot and knock out a yard easily in a day if you're not dealing with a bunch of roots or vines. I tilled out a good size spot for a garden a few years ago in an afternoon. The thought crossed my mind of doing the entire backyard and then seeding it with fresh grass. I may do that one of these years now that I have my own tiller.

Where did you get your sod? Delta?

That’s pretty. Good foundation to start with. You did the right thing.

yea sod is coming from Delta. all the sand and grading was done by some dude with a bobcat. dude was an animal. well worth the $750 to deliver, spread and grade 3 trucks worth of sand. here’s the front

Looks good. If there were before pics earlier I didn’t see them. Apparently the VPN still blocks stuff like image sites on my work laptop.

Great work. Wet the sand a bit before laying them down. If you do it today you’ll get some good rain this weekend for that new sod.

This thread is oddly satisfying to follow.

I can't decide if it is the effort I am enjoying that I know the OP is putting in or the progress/results.

Either way, keep the pics coming. Starting to look good man.

Massive improvement, great work! Backyard space is instantly livable.

I bet the little one that owns that tricycle will be very thankful.

I laid down Zoysia in my backyard last August. It has become my favorite thing about the whole backyard. Once it takes it’s amazingly thick and soft.

But water the hell out of it for next few weeks

You can turn it off.. It'll start looking withered so you'll need to turn it back on.. If it is mushy, I would turn it off for a little bit.. Thats what I did with my Celebration Bermuda last year.

Friend,

That looks great. Did you know you are just a few blocks from Carlos Marcello's old house? The great thing about that area for your grass is that the water table is only about one foot subterranean. Once your roots are well established, the yard should do great. Until that time, hope for rain. Otherwise water a lot.

Yours,
