Question about my peppers. I have two plants each of jalapenos and shishitos in identical pots which received identical soil and identical fertilizer. They are a couple of feet from each other. The jalapenos could not possibly look better. I mean, best pepper plants I have ever seen and multiple small peppers on the plants. The shishitos seem to be in a state of nothingness and some of the leaves are getting a little yellow and scrunchy looking. What could be?

I cut them. Which was hard to do, since those two cherry tomatoes were more than I produced my first two years of gardening combined But of all my tomatoes, that one was lagging behind the rest.

Year three for me and this is the first time I have a good feeling on how they are looking. Think I finally got my soil mixture right. Fingers crossed but all mine look good so far.

What’s a general rule of thumb for spacing between tomatoes? Okra? Peppers? Squash? In raised beds.

We planted yesterday and I’m just curious.

Also wondering what size pots y’all use for strawberries and what I could look to grow the smaller size watermelons in (besides a raised bed)

Thanks!

I loosely follow the square foot method. My spacing is one pepper per sqft, one tomato per 4sqft, and one okra per 2 sqft. I've always given the okra and tomatoes plants a bit more space than the general square foot gardening rules, just because they get pretty big.

Well shoot, I planted my okra one foot apart ha. That might be a problem.. did ok with the tomatoes and squash.

I will look up the square foot method - thank you!

Honestly the plants on the right look overwater, but it's hard to tell. It would be a little odd for them to be acting so differently than the jalapenos if they're both getting the same amount of nutrients, water, etc. though. How compacted is that potting mix? Peppers like loose mix.

Some photos of the garden's status as of yesterday. Tomatoes and peppers are setting a bunch of fruit. I think the cold nights the last couple of weeks may have cost me some early tomatoes, but whatever. Cucumbers and tromboncino squash are starting to climb. I'm expecting my squash and zucchini to start flowering over the next week. I'm a little later on them than usual just because I didn't star seeds indoors. Direct sowed them this year. Watermelon and cantaloupe are sluggish and probably will continue to be until the heat sets in. Everything is healthy though and thankfully, I've had no real pest problems yet. I think we're getting some rain today and tomorrow, then warm and sunny for the foreseeable future. Hoping for a lot of growth over that time.

Not very. I dump all my pots into a wheel barrow then mix in new compost every early spring. It was all mixed together then poured into each pots exactly the same way. I agree with the watered look. I will check to make sure it's draining the same as the other one. Could be a stoppage.

My cuke seedlings died on me, and the second batch looks like shite. May have to direct sow those. I'm struggling with seedlings this year for whatever reason.

I have two sets: 8 each of party time and beit alpha. My BAs all died, but my PTs may actually pull through. That week of cold we just had jacked them all up. I’m guessing it’s very likely what’s causing your issues. I just direct sewed 8 BAs to replace what died, and in a few weeks I’ll seed tray some to have backups on hand.

What kind of trellis would y'all recommend for tomatoes and watermelons?

For the tomatoes my thought would be to just do t-posts and stringing across? Believe it's called the Florida weave method?

Whereas for the watermelon my plan was to buy the concrete mesh to give it a little more support.

I've tried quite a bit for tomatoes and I always wind up going back to caging and staking the cages. Once they top the cage, I flip another cage upside down and connect it to the bottom cage with zip ties. It doesn't look the best, but it works.

I tried the Florida weave method last year and really didn't like it. It is high maintenance and requires frequent tying for new growth. If you prune your plants to one main stem, I think a tall stake would be fine. The cages are much lower maintenance for an indeterminate plant that is allowed to have multiple stems. I allow my indeterminates to have 3 main stems, so a single stake wouldn't work very well. Cattle panel or the safety wire with squares would work, but will require frequent clipping as the plants grow.

I’m still a big noob with all of this as I just started my first veggie garden last June. Been researching and saw this method for tomatoes. I’m giving it a go. You do have to remove the elbow shoots that develop to prevent side growth, but it allows you to grow one plant per foot.

Here’s a better look at my full setup. Tomatoes on the left and cucumbers right. Doing the same trellising method for both.

Also I’m stealing blue moon’s setup of wood border and pine mulch around the beds for a cleaner look. I hate how messy mine looks, and maintaining grass (what little I have) and weeds (I have an abundance if anyone wants some) is a challenge.

Is this similar to the "A trellis to make you jealous" youtube video? Looks good!

I am unfamiliar with that video, but I got the idea from a James Prigioni video where he did this setup. I researched and saw others doing it, so I decided to give it a shot. It was fun to build and pretty easy. So far everything is climbing nicely.
